Introduction
The City of Sheridan provides funding opportunities to local organizations in addition to municipal spending through the annual allocation of Optional One Cent Funds. Organizations receiving municipal and/or county funds do not operate within the formal structure of City or County governments but may utilize support from these governments to achieve their missions, or to fund special projects. These organizations generally have a strong presence within the community and provide vital services, products, or activities that serve to improve the community in a variety of ways. Historically, the organizations requesting funding have typically fallen within the following the following categories:
Economic and Community Development: These organizations have been established within our community to work for overall improvement, advancement and economic health through civic involvement, economic development initiatives and through fostering community spirit.
Facilities and Infrastructure: The City of Sheridan leverages One Cent funding for the critical repair and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. Past and current projects include the reconstruction of Wyoming/Park, Illinois, West Downtown, Loucks Street, and the North Sheridan Interchange.
Heritage and History: These organizations sponsor educational and community events or exhibits designed to encourage an appreciation of the diverse cultural background of the Sheridan area.
Water Quality, Open Space, Pathways, and Recreation: Funds allocated to this section sustain and develop recreational and leisure activities within the community, as well as assist in the maintenance of water quality. Drainage improvements, pathway crossings, and repairs to recreational facilities are included.
Public Health and Community Programs: This category includes organizations that support the health and well-being of members of the community. Efforts within this category aid in areas such as child development, support for at-risk youth, and reduced cost healthcare options.
Public Safety: Public safety campaignsinvolve non-enforcement based approaches to increase safety for residents of Sheridan County.
Seniors and Family: This category currently applies funding toward maintaining updated facilities and programs for Sheridan’s elderly population. The Senior Center provides home delivered meals, in home services, transportation, care programs, and more.
