Safe Work procedure:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
/ Inspect the work area - pre-operation walk-around inspection on the inside of the paint application booth. Observe surrounding work area for proper house keeping. / Improper housekeeping (slip, trip or fall in machine area)--Faulty non-operational equipment / Remove all clutter to ensure a safe, wide path to drive vehicle into the paint application booth. Ensure that there is enough room to maneuver yourself while inside the paint application booth.
/ Open doors to paint booth in order to drive vehicle inside. / Verbally warn all workers in the area that you will be operating the vehicle.
/ Enter vehicle, adjust mirrors and visually check around vehicle once more before engaging drive train to ensure there are no obstacles. Drive --vehicle from Point A to Point B, do not idle vehicle. / Injury to others - moving vehicle--Carbon Monoxide Production / Drive slowly, no faster than 5km/hr - watching out for co-worker that may not have heard verbal warning. --If the vehicle must idle, vent exhaust to outdoors.
/ Park vehicle once completely inside the booth, place transmission into park and turn off motor.
/ Put on personal protection equipment (PPE) nylon suit, rubber gloves and air fed respirator. / Potential fume inhalation / Before entering the paint application booth, inspect all personal protective equipment; inspect suit for any tears or cracks in the fabric, examine hood and visor for adequate vision, examine condition of connections for breathable air into the suit or air fed respirator.
/ Turn on main power switch to turn on exhaust fan and heat. / Faulty non-operational equipment - exhaust system not working properly / Ensure that the ventilation system in the booth is on and working properly.
/ Adjust sprayable air (for use with the paint gun) at the transformer inside of the booth / None / Adjust sprayable air on the transformer.
/ Attach line from breathable air to respirator, attach sprayable air to paint gun, ensure fingers are clear of any pinch points created by the pneumatic couplings. / Hand or finger too close to couplings - hand or finger injury pinch/crush / Ensure fingers are clear of any pinch points created by the pneumatic couplings.
/ Adjust the regulator on the paint gun to the --specified working pressure designated by the type of paint being applied. / None / Adjust the regulator on the paint gun to the specified working pressure designated by the type of paint being applied.
/ Depress the trigger to spray paint, holding paint gun approximately 8 inches away from surface to be painted. Keep fingers clear of any pinch points created by the gun and trigger. / Trigger and paint gun handle - hand or finger injury- pinch or crush--Fumes - inhalation / Keep fingers clear of any pinch points created by the gun and trigger. Depress trigger on paint gun to spray paint. --Wear PPE - air fed respirator. --
/ Spray paint in steady sweeping motion in two-foot intervals applying paint evenly covering desired surface. Avoid repetitive motion strain by taking breaks when strain becomes excessive. Slightly release trigger at the end of each passover of the surface, then depress trigger again to spray on the way back (left to right motion). This will ensure the surface is being coated evenly. / Repetitive motion strain--Trigger and gun handle pinch points / Avoid repetitive motion strain by taking breaks when strain becomes excessive. --Keep fingers clear of any pinch points created by the gun and trigger.
/ Repeat steps 10 and 11 until desired amount of paint has been applied. / Repetitive motion / Repeat until even amount of paint has thoroughly covered the --surface. Remember to take breaks when strain becomes excessive.
/ Release trigger / Trigger paint gun handle - hand or finger injury - pinch or crush / Release trigger watch placement of fingers.
/ Once satisfied with paint application; detach gun from air supply hose, detach breathable air supply from the respirator and proceed with paint gun to the gun cleaning station. / Hand or finger injury - to close to coupling - pinch or crush / Watch finger / hand placement when detaching hoses from couplings.
