Safer baby bottles with BASF engineering plastics

Honey-colored Ultrason® Ebaby bottles approved by
the FDA and the EU

Shanghai, November24, 2009–IVORY, a renowned producer of baby care products in China, has introduced baby bottles made from BASF’s polyethersulfone (PESU), Ultrason® E2010, an engineering plastic, which has excellent heat and hot water resistance properties.

Currently, baby bottles on the Chinese market are mainly made of glass or polycarbonate. Despite its many advantages, glass bottles are very brittle, thus creating potential safety hazards. Most plastic bottles are made of polycarbonate. Compared to these, PESU baby bottles made of Ultrason E can withstand temperatures up to 180°C,and can be repeatedly sterilized by steam at a high temperature or in a microwave oven. Meanwhile, owing to Ultrason’s excellent resistance to chemicals and impact forces, PESU bottles are easier to wash and more durable.

“Compared with polycarbonate, Ultrason® E has better resistance against hot water due to higher hydrolysis resistance,”says Mr. Hermann Althoff, BASF's Group Vice President, Engineering Plastics Asia Pacific. “It is shatter-proof and has been approved for food products by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)and the European Union. With its advantages over conventional plastic bottles, these bottles can better meet parents’ need to ensure proper sterilization.”

“When it comes to baby care products, safety is the top priority. At present, more and more feeding bottles in Japan, Europe and the United States are made of PESU. We want Chinese babies to use safer, high quality feeding bottles too,” said Mr. Qiu Yunan, Vice General Manager ofIVORY, Xiamen Modern Delta Ltd.
