Job description: Assistant StudentSupport Worker (Asst SSW)

Responsible to:Assistant LSM/Advanced SSW’s

Salary scale:RSD points 9 & 20.

Period of Notice:One calendar month

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide BSL support to Teachers
  2. Have a full understanding of the needs of the student and be able to adjust learning techniques accordingly and broaden and enrich own learning.
  3. Work with assigned students to support learning.
  4. Evaluating and record keeping.
  5. Provide specialist SEN, BESD, subject or other support.
  6. Undertake occasional cover supervision.
  7. Provide behaviour support.
  8. Promote and safeguardthe welfare of students and young people.
  9. Support deaf learners of different ages on a range of courses.
  10. Provide reinforcement of curriculum content for deaf learners.
  11. Support deaf learners through sign language communication, note-taking, language modification and lip-speaking.
  12. Support the delivery of deaf awareness.
  13. Support deaf learners in a range of settings including across the Academy, specialist provisions and other education providers.
  14. Provide communication support for the deaf learner in a variety of settings including annual reviews, examinations and meetings.
  15. Provide and respond to information from teachers, lecturers and specialist tutors about the needs of deaf learners (e.g. for assignments, coursework and exams).
  16. Liaise with Teachers and other appropriate professionals and where necessary provide written reports.
  17. As required to maintain current and accurate records of support work at all times and to contribute to the delivery of education support as required and agreed by the Deputy LSM.
  18. Undertake risk assessments for student related activities, which are likely to endanger the student learners and to ensure checks are carried out for ongoing activities.
  19. Assist with the development and implementation of Behaviour plans, Care Plans, Annual Review paperwork and the Academy Assessment framework.
  20. Provide feedback to students in relation to progress and achievement.
  21. Provide pastoral support to students.
  22. Attend to the student’s general welfare, personal needs and personal hygiene across the full age range as appropriate and following individual care plans.
  23. Work with the teacher to establish an appropriate learning environment
  24. Promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour, dealing promptly with challenging behaviours in line with individual behaviour plans and established policy and procedures.
  25. Liaise with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher.
  26. Provide general clerical/administrative support e.g. producing worksheets for agreed activities etc.
  27. Supervise whole classes during pre-planned learning activities, which have been set in accordance with the Academy policy.
  28. Work with Teachers to establish the appropriate learning environment including supporting with BSL as appropriate.
  29. Help new teachers with BSL.
  30. Support the Therapeutic team with Intervention for example Audiology.
  31. Assist with the supervision of students during break and lunch times.
  32. Ensure keep self up to date with Care plans and risk assessments.
  33. Flexibility and willingness to work across both the College and School.

Addendum

  1. Carrying out feeding, personal care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy programmes, as set by an appropriate therapist.
  2. Carry out First Aid activities for students and colleagues where required and as per appropriate training received.

Other duties:

  1. Participate in annual performance appraisals and undertake relevant staff development.
  2. To be responsible for the health and safety of self and others (in accordance with the Academy’s Health & Safety Policy).
  3. Provide cover in other areas as required.
  4. Carry out any other appropriate duties requested by the Chief Executive or Head of Department.
  5. To make secure all buildings on leaving the site.
  6. To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young adults responsible for (or come into contact with) in accordance with the Academy’s Safeguarding Policy & Procedures
