There are now 1,000 semi-trailers fitted with the TrailerConnect telematics system in Spain
There are now 1,000 active semi-trailers operating across Spain with TrailerConnect, the trailer telematics system developed independently by Schmitz Cargobull. A total of 27,000 units (BY 2015/2016) are in operation throughout Europe. Blascotrans, from Zaragoza, purchased the 1,000th unit in Spain as part of an investment drive in trailer telematics for its entire fleet of semi-trailers.
Zaragoza/Horstmar, July 2016 - José Luis Blasco, president of Blascotrans, highlights the confidence gained from controlling his fleet’s loads using a telematics system fitted to the company’s semi-trailers: “We can permanently monitor the position and condition of the vehicle, such as the brake pads through TrailerConnect. The system constantly reports their condition and prevents damage to the brake discs. In the future we hope to monitor the semi-trailers’ tyre pressures using this system as well.”
Juan Usón, responsible for the Schmitz Cargobull Telematics in Spain, emphasises the importance of trailer telematics for the general day-to-day running of a road transport or logistics operation. Juan Usón: “Companies are looking for efficiency savings in all areas, given the very competitive nature of the sector. Telematics systems on semi-trailers enable increased efficiency in traffic, administration, and maintenance areas, meaning it is possible to make a quick return on the investment. The users typically find that the data provided by this system becomes essential for the transport company as soon as the system has been installed.
Schmitz Cargobull Telematics’ TrailerConnect data system can provide real time vehicle data with just one click. It transmits the semi-trailer’s status (location, speed, axle loads, kilometres travelled, coupling, brake pad wear, and tyre pressures) and the load status (temperature, door status) to the dispatcher. This means monitoring areas can be established (geo-fencing) and routes pre-planned.

As a result, the dispatcher knows precisely when semi-trailers either leave from or arrive at a location. There is also a built-in smart warning system using e-mail and/or SMS to flag instances of overloading, temperature alerts or kilometres travelled.
