“Terminologies & Neologisms in the Eyes of Translators”

The Applied English Linguistics, Faculty of Education and Languages of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (LTBI Atma Jaya) in collaboration with the university’s Center for Studies on Language and Cultures (PKBB Atma Jaya) invite all those interested in translation and interpretation studies as well as those working in the industry to be the participants at TransCon 2015.

The participants will be able to attend three different events at TransCon 2015:

·  Main Conference

·  Professional Sharing Sessions

·  Legal Translation Workshop

The Main Conference purely focuses on a wide range of aspects of translation and interpretation studies. In addition to theMain Conference, we also invite all professional translators/ interpreters to submit an abstract and share their professional experiences and expertise in theProfessional Sharing Sessions. The participants will gain insights directly from professional translators, among others, about the way they dig out terminologies and cope with terminological issues in general. Furthermore, the participants are privileged to attend a Legal Translation Workshop, during which they will be introduced to a number of legal terminologies and the potential issues of translating legal terminologies.

TransCon 2015 welcomes both novice and sophisticated translators, academics, researchers, students, aspiring translators or interpreters. They will be able to explore the theoretical aspects of translation and interpretation and at the same time gain hands-on skills and tips from professional translators.

Keynote Speakers

Prof. Sue Ellen Wright, Ph.D.

Sue Ellen Wright is a Professor of German and a member of the Kent State University Institute (USA) for Applied Linguistics, where she teaches computer applications for translators and German to English technical translation. She is chair of the American Translators Association (ATA) Terminology Committee and is ATA certified for German to English translation. She is active as a terminology trainer and consultant for companies and institutions implementing terminology management in localization environments. Together with Professor Gerhard Budin of the University of Vienna she compiled the Handbook for Terminology Management and the author of many articles on applied terminology management in industry. In addition, she has written numerous articles outlining the role that TC 37 standards can play in a variety of venues, including translation and localization, translator training, and knowledge resource management. She has managed or participated in numerous projects at national and international level.

Ivan Lanin

Ivan Lanin is Wikipedian who always strongly and passionately advocates the use of proper Indonesian language. Although his educational background is not in linguistics (Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from ITB and Master’s degree in Information Technology from UI), since 2006, he has been actively campaigning for the proper and correct use of the Indonesian language through various social networks such as blogs, Twitter, and Facebook. He has initiated several websites that have long served as linguistic resources for students, linguists and translators, such as Kateglo (a program combining a dictionary, thesaurus, and glossary for translators), Rubrik Bahasa (a collection of language-related articles from the mass media), Tanja Bahasa (Q-A about issues of the Indonesian language), and Asal Kata (Indonesian etymological dictionary). He was a member of the team of reviewers for Google Indonesia, a judge in a language-related blog contest organized by the National Language Center (Badan Bahasa), and a member of the Terminology Advisory Commission of the National Language Center.

Margaretha M. Adisoemarta

Margaretha graduated with a Master’s Degree in Linguistics from the University of Indonesia. Her thesis was concerned with a Translation Criticism, using the Functional Text Analysis Approach. She is a practising interpreter for Indonesian-English language pair, with more than 14 years of experience. She is also a lecturer at Atma Jaya Graduate School of Applied Linguistics, teaching Translation and Interpretation Theories and Practice. In the Association of Indonesian Translators (HPI), Margaretha is Chair of the Competency and Certification Committee, in charge of implementing and developing the certification system for Indonesian translators and interpreters.

Legal Translation Workshop Facilitator:

Evand Halim

Evand Halim is currently teaching Translation in the Master’s program of the Graduate School of Applied English Linguistics of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Evand is also Vice Chair of the Competency and Certification Committee at the Association of Indonesian Translators (HPI). He is charged with developing and administering the National Certification Examination for Indonesian translators. Additionally, Evand is widely recognized today as a prominent authority on legal translation in Indonesia, having a host of teaching experiences in various governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations as well as law firms.
