Special Needs Trusts
This presentation will review the basic types of special needs trusts and the legal requirements for each, including highlights of the recent state and federal changes applicable to such trusts. The presenters will also cover the most common challenges that arise in the administration of these trusts.
Patricia Nelson-Reade dedicates her practice to elder law, with particular emphasis on trust, estate and tax planning, planning for persons with special needs, and personal injury settlement management. In her over twenty years of practice in the area of elder law, Patti is well known for her novel and unique solutions to each client’s particular situation.
Patti is a certified elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation (CELA), VA accredited, and is also a member of the Special Needs Alliance, the premiere national organization of select lawyers working on special needs planning for disabled individuals and their families. Since 2007, Patti has been selected by her peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America. She has also been recognized as a “super lawyer” by the New England Super Lawyers publication for her work in elder law, and in 2009, she was named as one of the top 50 women lawyers in New England. In 2010, Patricia was named in theInaugural Edition of the U.S. News Best Lawyers, Best Law Firms, again in the area of elder law. Patti has continuously received the highest rating in ethics and as a preeminent lawyer from Martindale-Hubbell peer review.
Patti graduated summa com laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of North Florida and enjoyed being a nurse for seven years before deciding to attend law school. Patricia graduated first in her class from the University of Maine School of Law in 1988, where she was editor-in-chief of the Maine Law Review. After graduation from law school, Patricia was selected for a clerkship to the Maine Supreme Judicial court.
Patti is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Maine Elder Law Section of the Maine Bar Association, the Special Needs Alliance andthe Maine Estate Planning Council. When not advocating for the needs of her clients, Patti enjoys traveling, biking, long walks on the beach, and spending time with her husband and three children.
Kate Geoffroy has been practicing law in Maine since 1988. Prior to joining the Nelson-Reade Law Office in 2003, Kate was with Pierce Atwood, the largest law firm in Maine. Kate holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Yale University (1980) and a J.D. cum laude (1988) from Boston College Law School. Her practice focuses on all aspects of elder law, including estate and long term care planning, probate, guardianship and conservatorship, and special needs planning. She speaks regularly on elder law issues at professional conferences and community events.
