Artist Study

Name: ______

In this final art assignment this year, you will be creating a report, piece of art work and a dramatic conclusion about an artistic of your choice.

Step One – Biographical Study

ü  Go through the books provided and choose an artist to study in depth for this assignment. Choose someone who seems interesting to you or whose art or method of creating art inspires you.

ü  Get your artist choice approved by Ms. Rocha.

ü  Begin taking rough notes in the graphic organizer provided about the history of your artist.

ü  Don’t forget to include a bibliography of any book and/or online resources you used.

Language – Report

You will create a written report about your artist. It will be 1-2 pages typed when complete and will contain some of the components listed below. Add your own information based on what you find out during your research:

ü  Basic Info: name, birthday, death (if applicable), location of birth, where did s/he live? What was their life like?

ü  Career: How did their career as an artist develop? Was s/he always an artist?

ü  Artistry: What mediums did they use? Did this vary? What/who were their paintings inspired by?

ü  Body of work: Provide an image, caption and descriptive paragraph about a minimum of 3 pieces of their work. Describe what elements of design (line, shape, space, colour, texture and/or value) your artist uses in their work.

ü  Interpretation: Discuss the feelings, issues, themes and/or social concerns that your artists’ work shows.

ü  Choice(s): Locate other information that has not been asked above that may pertain to your artist.

Step Two- “In the style of…”

ü  Using sketching paper, we will take two trips to the pond to do some initial sketching of different scenes there. Consider what elements of Toogood Pond your artist would have focused on.

Visual Art – Composition

Now that your sketching is complete, convert your images onto canvas. You will be provided with a 9” x 12” canvas or an 18” x 24” canvas in order to complete your final piece of art.

ü  Choose a medium (chalk, pastel, oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolours) that your artist would have chosen.

ü  Create a final product on the theme of Toogood Pond in the style (pointillism, cubism, abstract, etc.)

Step Three – The Artist’s Café

After your report is written and your art is created, you are going to take on the role of your artist. You will meet the other artists in a café style atmosphere where you will have an opportunity to have ‘conversations’ with other artists.

You will:

ü  Discuss who you are and any important information about yourself.

ü  Discuss your work of art.

ü  Comment positively on the other artist’s masterpiece.

ü  Ask the other artist’s questions about themselves and their art.

ü  Dress in costume as your artist.

ü  Remain in role as your artist for the entire artist café drama.

Near the end of this assignment, we will have an opportunity to go for a guided tour of the Varley Art Gallery on Main Street!
