Courses:

Read, Write Inc:Expressions of interest are now invited from KS1/Lower KS2 teachers and TAs who would like to take part in a 2 day course designed to transform the teaching of early reading and writing.

When: Day 1- Monday 21st November 2016, Day 2- Friday 9th December 2016

Where: The Durham Leadership Centre, Enterprise Way, Spennymoor, DL16 6YP.

Shaping Behaviour: This course is led by Justin Peoples, Deputy Headteacher at Fishburn Primary School and Specialist Leader of Education.

Audience:Teachers (middle and senior leaders, NQTs and RQTs) Teaching Assistants, Learning Mentors

Year Groups: Year 1- Year 6

Aims:

  • To develop proactive behaviour management strategies
  • Leave with practical resources and skills to tackle challenging behaviour
  • Learn how to deal with children in crisis
  • Minimise disruption in your class and around school, creating a purposeful climate for learning

Anxieties, Worries and Fears-This course will be led by Nick Connell (mental health nurse, social worker and play therapist). This workshop focuses on children’s anxiety, worries andfears.You will find out what to do when these normal emotions and feeling become a problem or disorder. You will begin to recognise and understand the reasons and triggers for anxiety, worries and fears and learn how anxiety, worries and fears can present andimpact on children's learning and lives.

Raising Self Esteem and Emotional Wellbeing,a one day course for middle leaders

This one day course will be led by Jayne Heron and is designed for teachers in middle leadership roles. It will provide a unique opportunity to exploreself –esteem, assertiveness and confidence. It’s based on the belief that staff cannot develop the confidence of children unless they have confidence and belief in their own ability. All course materials will link to the Ofsted Framework of Inspection with particular reference to Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare and the PSHE Programme of Study from the PSHE Association. The course will examine what affects self-esteem and will give you the tools to implement new approaches and thinking for yourself, with staff and children.

HLTA 3 day Preparation:This course is for Teaching Assistants who aspire to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status. This is a very successful and highly regarded programme for Teaching Assistants (more than 60 TAs completed training with the Durham Teaching School Alliance in 2015/16). The window for applications for 2016-17, Cohort 2, is now open.This course is led by Kate Jones from HLTA North

The Importance of Raising Self Esteem and Confidence, a one day course for TAs.This one day course is designed for Teaching Assistants and is led by Jayne Heron. It will provide a unique opportunity to explore self -esteem and confidence. Using Counselling Skills to Improve Communication

This is a great opportunity for middle and senior leaders and staff in non- teaching roles to explore the power of counselling skills to develop and improve communication to make leadership and followership in your school more effective. This course is designed for all teaching professionals. It will help you to communicate more congruently and effectively with adults, children and young people. You will learn how to deal positively with conflict, resolve issues effectively, understand negative feelings and limiting beliefs and ultimately improve learning and well- being.

The Science of Learning: This course is for Teaching Assistants. The trainer for this course is Dr Tom Robson. Tom is a teacher, consultant, author and speaker, he has worked in many of Co Durham’s schools. Tom is as comfortable working with children in YR as he is working with students in KS4/5. Tom is inspirational and motivational, his courses and conferences fill very quickly. Tom will be exploring: how we learn, how children learn in different ways, the language of learning, resilience, challenge and stress and most importantly understanding the learning process to maximize outcomes.

Think Like a Learner This course is for school governors. The trainer for this course is Dr Tom Robson. Tom has worked extensively with school governors in many of Co Durham’s schools. Tom is now an educational consultant, he has been a senior LA adviser, NPQH mentor and Ofsted inspector. Tom is an inspirational and motivational speaker, teacher and learner, his courses and conferences fill very quickly. Tom will be exploring: what governors need to know to help raise school achievement, the significance of talk, the meaning of education, team work and collaboration, cooperation and specific observable behaviours
