Reading Response Example- Characters are Complicated

In the book EGGS, by Jerry Spinelli, the main character, David, tries to overcome the loss of his mother. David’s mother dies by slipping on a wet floor, and he moves in with his grandmother in Perkiomen. He is extremely upset and is rude to his grandmother, who tries to support him. David meets a teenage girl, Primrose, and they become unlikely friends. Their friendship allows David to eventually overcome the loss of his mother and find love within others.

Primrose is a complicated character in the book EGGS. She is often nasty because she doesn't speak nicely to anyone, especially David. For example, she calls David names and she says to him, "Not all babies are as dumb as you." (page 80). On the other hand, she is also sweet. She saves the last malt ball and last sip of Mango Madness for David even though it was hers. Primrose is both nasty and sweet in the book EGGS.

After reading EGGS, I learned that it can be difficult to overcome the loss of someone close to you. I also learned that they way to move past that type of depression is to reach out and find support in others. I learned this because David became much happier once he opened up to Primrose. Even though he was still sad about his mother, with her help, he was able to still live his life. From this book, I learned that friendship can help you overcome sadness.

David changes in the book EGGS. In the beginning of the book, David is rude. He is disrespectful to his grandmother and doesn’t listen to anything she says. On page 24, David left the house even though his grandmother told him not to. It says, “He was out the door, slamming it behind.” Towards the end of the book, David changes. He changes because of Primrose. At the end of the book, David is friendly. He invites a lot of people to his birthday party, even a boy, Tim, that he doesn’t know very well. When asked if Tim should be invited on page 216, David relied, “Okay. Put him down.” David changes from rude to friendly in the book EGGS.
