Re: Fairgrounds Site Outages

David,

The CSB Fairgrounds location has had intermittent connectivity issues in (2) of the (3) staff areas. EHSD Network Services has worked on this problem consistently with regards to network connectivity for the better part of three weeks. We have discovered the problem, and have determined that in order to provide consistent robust network connectivity, the following things must occur:

·  Installation of properly terminated wiring plant (Category 6 Gig speed), in order to support data closet/LAN to workstation connectivity.

·  Installation of optical fiber between the Building B, and D locations in order to provide stable building to building connectivity within tolerance levels of 100MB 802.3 IEEE standards.

·  Install manageable networking devices with the capability to provide trap information back to a central management console on both the LAN and WAN level, to reduce the time between troubleshooting and repair for EHSD staff.

I have attached the Fluke Linkware status reports in order to detail the root of the problem as we were able to determine while troubleshooting the issue. First, the site’s cabling is substandard at best. This causes an inordinate amount of cable errors which cause ports to shut down, both on the network and workstation end. In the instance of the Fairground site, the port that is susceptible to this is the primary building B to Building D primary data cable link. This link causes many errors due to the fact that it is beyond the 802.3 IEEE cabling distance standard of 100 Meters for Category 6 Gig speed cabling (Please see attached web links). In addition to the Linkware Stats reports, I am attaching the request for data cabling and fiber for the Fairgrounds location.

My recommendation is to effect the repairs I have stated in order to ensure the continued connectivity for staff at this location, and use this as a template for remediation for all of the CSB remote district office Locations. I am placing a Department of Technology work request that can be forwarded to the appropriate CSB staff for review and action (In Progress).

Thank you,

Ralph L. White, Network Analyst II
