For the Master of Environmental Science and Management, students must complete a minimum of number of units toward a primary specialization. The specialization is intended to build depth in a particular area and develop technical skills. The minimum specialization elective units = 82 units minus the number of CORE units. For most students the minimum specialization units is 82-46 = 36. If student waives a course, then the minimum number of specialization units will be more than 36.
· MINIMUM specialization elective units are typically 36, unless a core course is waived.
· Students may count a MAXIMUM of 4 units of ESM 596 towards their primary specialization.
· Students may count a MAXIMUM of 8 units of UPPER DIVISION undergraduate coursework as approved their advisor(s) towards their primary specialization. LOWER DIVISION coursework cannot be counted.
· Students may count a MAXIMUM of 4 units of 400-level coursework. This does not include work done for the master’s thesis i.e. 401ABCD/ 402ABCD.
· Students may take up to 8 units of specialization elective courses as P/NP (undergraduate course numbers 100-199) or S/U (graduate course numbers 200 and above).
· Students should NOT include supplemental courses from the secondary specialization, Eco-Entrepreneurship focus, and Communication focus on the Graduate Check Form UNLESS the primary specialization faculty advisor has approved those courses to build depth in the primary specialization.

Quarterly Workload Planning
This section will assist in planning your quarterly workload. Please include in this planning worksheet all courses from your primary specialization, and, if applicable, the courses from your secondary specialization, Eco-Entrepreneurship focus, and/or Communication focus. The Bren School advises 16 units per quarter, and additional units should be discussed with your specialization advisor. Please add additional lines as needed.
To aid in your planning, please feel free to consult our Annual History of Course Offerings document, located on the Class Schedule webpage, to see during which quarter courses are usually offered.
