Create an African American History Magazine
Format: Your final project should look like a newspaper or magazine! You may use Microsoft Publisher to help if you would like. There is a tip sheet on my website for how to use it. This is not required, but it does look well done when it is used. Because many of the people you may include are deceased, many of your articles must be in terms of a biography format.
Include: Magazine or Newspaper Title: (ex) The African American Yearly Review 2012
City of Publication: (ex) Piscataway, NJ
Date/Month of Publication (ex) The year of 2010 (you may use articles that cover an entire year of events)
Contents of your newspaper/magazine:
1. 3 Headline News articles. (minimum 5 paragraphs each) A Headline article is a major article of something going on that is relevant. For example, an article that would have worked for this type of newspaper was when Barack Obama was elected as the first African American President in the US or Colin Powell becoming the first African American Secretary of State.
2. 3 Letters to the editor: These letters should be about a paragraph long and should express your opinion of topics that are relevant in the year of your newspaper. For example, a topic that may be worth writing on today is Affirmative Action. Whether you think it is working or not.
3. 2 personal portraits: This will be a biographical article about an individual who made a mark on American History. This article should be at least 5 paragraphs.
4. 1 chart. Can be on any topic relevant to the year that you chose. For example, make a chart comparing populations of African Americans by state. There are many options here.
5. 5 advertisements for products or social events that any newspaper or magazine would have. For example, an ad about an upcoming concert or an advertisement about a product such as shoes or clothing.
6. 1 crossword puzzle using a minimum of 10 African American people from the list. (suggestion, use puzzlemaker.com)
7. 1 word puzzle using a minimum of 10 African American people from the list. (suggestion, use puzzlemaker.com)
8. 5 photographs at minimum with a caption included.
***Keep in mind that everything you do must be focused to a person on the list***
