PEDIATRIC NURSING PROBLEMS

Catalog Description:

72 - Pediatric Nursing Problems 1.5 units

Nursing interventions that assist the child and family with adaptive processes necessary to cope with acute and chronic conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. Includes but is not limited to medical/surgical illnesses, child abuse, growth and development, pharmacological actions, and cultural diversity as they affect nursing care of children. Emphasis on advanced concepts of pediatric nursing . Prerequisite: Nursing 70 (completed with a grade of C or higher). 1.5 hours.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

1. explain growth and development of the child:

a. as it affects response to disease;

b. when it may indicate presence of disease process;

c. in relation to separation anxiety;

d. and the role of play in health and illness;

2. identify common medical and/or surgical conditions that affect children at various ages;

3. demonstrate knowledge of nursing interventions in acute and chronic conditions of children including:

a. personal hygiene;

b. gavage feeding;

c. oxygen therapy;

d. cast care;

e. adaptations necessary to the administration of medications for infants and children;

f. actions and interactions of drugs as they affect children;

g. fluid and caloric needs based on weight and age;

h. interview as basis for care plan for child;

4. discuss parental teaching to assist parents to care for their child:

a. discussing reasons to follow therapy or prescribed treatment;

b. explaining important safety factors appropriate for each age;

c. stating need for adequate health supervision for the growing child;

d. demonstrating understanding of how cultural diversity may affect parental attitudes and/or willingness to seek and follow through with health care;

5. discuss implications of hospitalization, long term illness, and/or terminal illness of child on child and family:

a. its impact on the family;

b. the nurse's own feelings;

c. therapeutic listening;

d. use of play or art to assist the child to express feeling if unable to do so verbally;

6. discuss legal ramifications and nursing responsibilities in child abuse situations.

Course Content:

1. Medical and surgical conditions of children at various age levels

2. Principles of nursing care of the child with an acute or chronic illness at various age levels

3. Parent education

4. Effect of hospitalization, long term illness, and/or terminal illness on child and family

5. Legalities and nursing responsibilities in the child abuse situation

Methods of Presentation:

1. Discussion

2. Audio-visual aids

3. Guided independent study

Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:

Paper and pencil tests
