Supervisor and Intern Responsibilities and Contract

1) Art therapy internships involve a minimum of twenty hours per week for a period of nine months Sept – April. Intern hours and days will be agreed upon before the start of the internship in September.

Two sick days will be permitted during each semester. Any other time off will need approvalfrom your supervisor 2 weeks prior to the requested time. All time must be made up.

2) Supervisor will provide intern with one hour of weekly clinical supervisionby a Licensed and Registered Art Therapist (LCAT-ATR).

3) Supervisor will orient intern to the hospital setting, units and department and provide resources related to the population and setting.

4) Supervisor will provide intern with appropriate art therapy referrals or patients to be assessed for art therapy services.

5) If supervisor is unexpectedly out of the hospital, s/he will appoint a preceptor for intern to report to.

6) Supervisor will remain in contact with academic supervisor and provide updates as needed about intern progress.

7) Students will regularly attend and participate actively in scheduled interdisciplinary conferences, meetings, educational seminars and weekly Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy In-Services.

8) Students will present two formal case presentations, a cultural and diagnosis presentation as well as a final project during the Internship.

9) Interns may be responsible to plan and lead one or more creative arts therapy groups per week in either the outpatient Hematology/Oncology Clinic, inpatient units, or the inpatient playrooms. These theme-based groups may be facilitated with children of all ages or parents of patients.

10) Interns will work individually with patients in their assigned area daily in the following contexts:

A) Caseload Patients: Patients will be assigned to interns who are hospitalized for an extended, repeated admission and who require individual art therapy treatment during their hospital stays.

B) Evaluation: Patients assigned to intern for evaluation session(s) to assess development and adjustment to hospitalization through formal and informal art therapy assessment.

11) Interns will keep a written/picture journal/sketchbook daily for written process notes after each patient contact and will submit weekly to supervisor for review.

12) Interns are required to write up progress notes for each individual, group and family session and submit to supervisor for review within 24 hours of the session.

13) Interns may be assigned a volunteer whom they will direct, supervise and use for assistance during groups.

14) Interns will be required to read all clinical and training material distributed by supervisor.

15) Interns are strongly recommended to be in their own personal psychotherapy or art therapy during this internship.

16) Incoming Art Therapy Interns may be processed as Volunteers with MSCH.

17) Interns are expected to dress as professionally as possible: no jeans, sneakers, or open-toed shoes.

18) Interns will contribute to the organization and maintenance of supplies, which includes disinfecting used supplies.

19) Interns will set specific learning goals for their internship that coincide with the goals given by the American Art Therapy Association, Internship, and/or Academic Supervisors

20) Interns will successfully complete one month probation period, and will participate in their evaluations at the end of their first rotation and at the completion of their internship.

Attendance, Lateness and Assignments Policy

  • If the Art Therapy Intern is going to be late, he/she must contact the Clinical Supervisor by both phone and email, while also sending an email to the Child Life and Creative Arts therapy Education Committee email address:
  • Upon your second lateness you will receive a verbal warning. If the Art Therapy Intern continues to be late, the Internship Supervisor will be contacted to address this issue
  • When calling out sick, contact the Clinical Supervisor by phone and email, while also sending an email to the Child Life Education Committee email address:
  • If the Art Therapy Intern’s illness requires more than one day off, the intern must bring a doctor’s note to the Internship Supervisor upon return, and the situation will be addressed with the Art Therapy Intern and Academic Supervisor(s).

Assignments

  • All assignments must be completed on-time. Upon the first late assignment, the Intern will receive a verbal warning. Upon the second late assignment the Internship Supervisor will address this issue with the Intern, Clinical Supervisor, and Academic Supervisor(s)

Technical Standards for Art Therapy Students in Clinical Settings.

Communication:

With or without reasonable accommodation, an art therapy intern must demonstrate sufficient oral, written, and nonverbal communication skills in order to:

a. Communicate effectively, accurately, respectfully and sensitively with patients, their families and members of the health care team.

b. Recognize and respond appropriately to non-verbal communications, including facial expression, body language and affect.

c. Document information accurately and clearly and communicate effectively in various forms of written or electronic media (i.e electronic charting systems) in English with other health care professionals in a variety of clinical settings.

Intellectual Ability:

With or without reasonable accommodation, an art therapy intern must demonstrate sufficient intellectual abilities in order to:

a. Analyze and integrate concepts and problem-solve to develop clinical judgments appropriate to the practice of art therapy services.

b. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply complex information presented in the form of seminars, written materials, and clinical experiences.

c. Understand and apply strategies for creating contextually-relevant and supportive psychosocial experiences for infants, toddlers, children, adolescents and families.

d. Analyze, integrate, and apply detailed and complex information for problem solving and decision-making in an appropriate and timely manner for any given clinical situation.

Behavioral and Social Attributes:

With or without reasonable accommodation, an art therapy intern must possess the requisite professional behaviors and dispositions in order to:

a. Organize time and materials, prioritize tasks, perform several tasks at once and readily adapt to changing situations.

b. Demonstrate flexibility and sound judgment under stress (e.g. complete work within time constraints, maintain concentration during distracting situations, cope with diverse workloads, maintain personal and professional composure and respond appropriately in urgent and emergent situations).

c. Demonstrate compassion, empathy, integrity, responsibility, honesty in addition to emotional health and stability in meeting the varying demands of the art therapy intern’s role.

d. Exhibit positive actions and language for children, family members, and colleagues.

e. Accept and respond in a professional manner to constructive feedback from the clinical supervisor.

f. Demonstrate self-reflective practice, as well as the desire for continued learning and professional development.

g. Demonstrate flexibility and cooperation with others to work collaboratively.

h. Demonstrate professional ethics outlined in the American Art Therapy Code of Ethics.
