Disney Skyway Script

- Intro –

So today were going to be talking about the Walt Disney World Skyway. This was suggested by Albertice2. Now before you say anything, I will only be discussing the abandoned skyway stations in the Magic Kingdom. If you don’t know what the skyway was, it was a gondola lift attraction. If you don’t know what that is its pretty much a ski lift ride thing… You know the ski lifts that take you up the mountain, its pretty much that much just with buckets. Uh So lets dive into the history shall we?

So the Skyway was a ride that began its life in the Disneyland resort in California. It was built by Von Roll Ltd based in bern, Switzerland, of all places right? Anyway it was the first Von Roll Type 101 aerial ropeway in the United States. Walt Disney Imagineering bought the 1947 Vonrollsidechair model car and ride from Switzerland. In 1959 the Skyway was added to Disneyland in California part of the major renovations to the park. Part of this renovation included the Disneyland Monorail and the Matterhorn. It traveled at a speed of 4mph, with a top height of 60ft. It operated with a maximum of 42 cars and held 4 guests or 700 pounds. The skyway in WDW anyway connected, well it was technically 2 rides where it connected between fantasyland and tomorrowland. Both the WDW and Disneyland versions of the ride operated as a D ticket ride which costed 75c but I also found a Disneyland version saying it was 40c so I’m not sure

The skyway operated in 3 parks, these include Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland and Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom. The Disneyland skyway was the first to close which was 1994. The closure was due to actually a structural problem within the Matterhorn in which the skyway passed through.

In 1998 Tokyo Disneyland closed the skyway just due to age. The tomorrowland station was demolished to make way for a new ride at the time called Poohs Hunny Hunt which is actually similar to the one in WDW which used the ride idea a few years later.

And finally in 1999 the last version of the ride in WDW was closed and demolished. Many rumors spread now about why the skyway closed. One of the biggest rumor that goes around is that it closed due to a few deaths caused by the skyway. And well they’re quite untrue. If Disney closed attractions due to this, literally Mission would like close next week. Cause that ride like kills people every freaking week. I’m kidding of course but close enough. The reason the attraction closed is mostly due to the fact that it aged to the point where it was time for it to go. And even in the official press release, that’s the reason they gave. Alright so this is where we get to the abandoned stuff. So both of the stations were left abandoned. The tomorrowland station was just left as this random building outside of Space Mountain. Then in 2009, when twomorrowland was doing this whole minor referb thing part of the building was destroyed leaving only the bathroom section. So now the building is only used as bathrooms.

For the more interesting abandoned stations, the fantasyland station was left abandoned for more then 10 years. The building was left un used for quite a while until the stations queue was used as a dwarfs meet and greet. The actual building however was completely left vacant with no matinence at all. Rumors in 2009 started to spread about the fantasyland station being structurally unstable and was said that Disney was to tear it down after the demolition of the tomorrowland station of the same year. Finally in 2011, 12 years after the closing of the skyway, the station was destroyed with new tangled themed bathrooms to replace it.

As of 2014 most of the evidence of the skyway is gone. Both stations and all the pillars have been removed. The skyway lived a very long life and had to go. So thanks for watching our 3rd episode of abandoned and remember to leave a comment and tell us what you want to see for next time. Thank for watching and we’ll see you later.
