Picasso, Hand Holding Flowers

Students learn about painter Pablo Picasso. Students gain color mixing skills with tempera paint. Students create painting of flowers in hands to give as “Mothers day” card/present.

-pencil
-Scratch paper
-Tempera Paint-yellow, blue, red
-Small, stiff paint brushes
-water cups
-paper with “hands “ printed on it to resemble Picasso’s painting
Procedure:
Classroom Teacher:
1.  Introduce project with resources and Picasso videos from Wiki page
2.  Have students look closely at Picasso’s Hand Holding Flowers
3.  Discuss-get student’s reactions to the painting, and video of Picasso painting
4.  Have students practice drawing simple flowers like those in Hand Holding Flowers
5.  Students draw flowers where they will be painting them on the good paper
6.  Watch color video- discuss color wheel and color mixing
***Have good paper with flowers drawn in place ready for art teacher
Art Teacher:
1.  Review intro info from previous week.
2.  Hand out good paper with flowers drawn .
3.  Teacher demo painting technique including color mixing.
4.  Students begin painting stems with green-then flowers on top of stems, lightest colors first, dark last…
5.  Continue painting…. / Exit Expectations:
