· Since the last outreach report, we added a few events. The biggest event added was the SAE Congress. This provided an opportunity for our vehicle to be exposed to professionals in the automotive industry.

Audience: Area high school and middle school students, as well as the general Morgantown public.
Activity description/details: The vehicle was set up at the vocational/technical school for viewing. The team discussed the vehicle’s architecture as well as spreading awareness of the Challenge X project.
Key Messages Covered: West Virginia University’s mission to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

2. Activity name: SAE Congress

Team participants: Outreach Coordinator, Treasurer, Emissions Co-captain, and Generator Captain
Audience: SAE Congress attendees including college students as well as professional engineers and engineering professors.
Activity description/details: SAE Congress student design competition. Our team made a nice display with flyers and other handouts. The booth was a part of the congress display as well as the student booth competition.
Key Messages Covered: West Virginia University’s progress throughout the Challenge X competition. The design aspects of the WVU Equinox including the hybrid architecture and improved fuel economy were main topics of discussion.

3. Activity name: Ohio State (Guitar Hero/Gaming Day)

Team participants: Display Team Captain and Graduate Assistant
Audience: College Students
Activity description/details: Guitar Hero Challenge sponsored by Ohio State Challenge X. This was a charity event. The WVU Equinox was set up with TV’s in the back with guitar hero. Students could pay $1.00 to play a game and all of the money went to charity. Meanwhile, the team had an opportunity to expose a different group of people to the architecture of the WVU Challenge X vehicle.

4. Activity name: WVU-ASME Auto Show

Activity description/details: ASME sponsored a car show at the school’s coliseum. There were many vehicles present, and the WVU Challenge X Vehicle was showcased.

Engineering Campus for freshman engineering students to inquire about. The goal was to educated freshman about the different types of engineering involved with Challenge X.

Audience: Prospective area high school students looking into an engineering
major.
Activity description/details: The vehicle was on display at the Challenge X
shop. Team members were also present to answer any questions.
Key Messages Covered: WVU informed the students of the growing need to
reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. The students learned how an engineering major can put them on the path to help find a solution for these issues.

3. Activity name: Counselor Visitation Day (High School Counselors)

Activity description/details: The vehicle was on display at the Challenge X
shop. Counselors were able to learn about the Challenge X program in order to properly convey the information to high school seniors interested in an engineering major.

from around the area and explained the Challenge X program. WVU has been involved with environmentally friendly competitions for almost 20 years now.

D. Social Marketing – 5 points
Please list all updates or modifications to your team’s website since July 2007
The overall design of the website has maintained the same from the 2006-2007 competition year. New section for photographs was added. The outreach section has been updated as well as team members and contact information.
The new media aspects used by WVU in the year 2007-2008 includes a facebook group for WVU Challenge X, as well as a commercial that has been uploaded to youtube.
E. Wrap-up – 3 points
West Virginia University’s outreach goals consisted of informing larger markets about the Challenge X competition. Early in the semester we planned to travel to the SAE Congress and Washington D.C. Auto Show. This allowed us to educate large groups of people at a single event. In addition, we continued to educate local high school students and faculty members on hybrid vehicle technology.
