Incorporate Societal Issues, Cutting-Edge Research
and Technological Design in Biology and Chemistry
High school biology and chemistry teachers in both public and non-public schools in New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, New York City and surrounding area are invited to participate in piloting a curriculum module that will incorporate societal issues, cutting-edge research and technological design in existing curricula. This module will expose teachers and students to significant STEM content by exploring a current issue in science and society with a focus on possible technological approaches to addressing the issue. Several modules have been developed; teachers will be matched with a module that most closely matches topics taught in their existing curriculum.
This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Stevens Institute of Technology. The 3-day workshop will be conducted by the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens, with participation of faculty and/or staff associated with the program. A maximum of 16 teachers can be accommodated.
Teacher Benefits and Commitments
· Three-day professional development institute to be held at Stevens in August 2010
· Teacher stipend of $300 for the 3-day workshop; additional $75 upon completion of all project requirements
· Lab materials and lesson plans for one class of students will be provided
· One classroom visit per teacher
· Implement the module in your classroom during the 2010-2011 school year
· Provide feedback on the module and classroom implementation
· Welcome Stevens observers into your classroom
Teams of science teachers from individual schools/districts are encouraged, but not required, to apply. Teams should indicate the names of other district teachers on their applications but each individual must complete an application.
