Subject: Andres y Maria Cardenas Family Foundation To Award its Millionth Scholarship Dollar

Date: Scholarship Dates: January 17 - March 2, 2012

About: In May of 2012, the Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation will award its one millionth scholarship dollar to students in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, a community in which only about 50% of students graduate from high school. The Foundation has awarded nearly 1,000 scholarships to date. Ernie Cardenas, President of the Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation, states that the Foundation is “thrilled to have reached such a milestone in supporting students across the Northeast Valley to realize their dreams of a college education.” In addition, the Foundation is also proud to announce the expansion of the scholarship program as a pilot initiative to the Cesar Chavez Learning Academy: Social Justice Humanitas Academy, a new high school that opened in the Fall of 2011. The Principal, Jose Navarro, states “I’m proud that my school will be associated with an organization such as the Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation, a foundation that is doing things the right way, investing in the community by helping our young people reach their full potential.”

On January 17, 2012, the application for the Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation scholarship will be released and available for students to submit online. All selected recipients and their parents will attend a mandatory orientation to prepare them for the transition to college, and will be honored at the 16th Annual Community Breakfast on Sunday, May 20th. The work of the Foundation would not be possible without the generous support of funders, individuals, and Community Breakfast Sponsors.

The Andrés y María Cárdenas Family Foundation was founded in 1997 to award college scholarships to deserving and ambitious students from the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Current high school seniors and alumni from the following ten high schools are eligible to apply: Arleta, Cesar Chavez Learning Academies: Social Justice Humanitas Academy, James Monroe, John F. Kennedy, North Hollywood, Panorama, Polytechnic, San Fernando, Sylmar, and Van Nuys. In addition, current students at Los Angeles Mission College are eligible to apply.
