Second Sunday after Easter

Opening Hymn: 140 Christ is alive! Let Christians sing

The Collect:

Almighty God, who has given your thine Son to be unto us both a sacrifice for sin, and also an ensample of godly life: Give us grace that we may always most thankfully receive that his inestimable benefit, and also daily endeavour ourselves to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

First Reading: Ezekiel 34: 11-16a

Psalm 23

1 THE Lord ’ is my ’ shepherd : therefore ’ can I ’ lack ’ nothing.

2 He shall feed me in a ’ green ’ pasture : and lead me forth be’side the ’ waters of ’ comfort.

3 He shall con’vertmy ’ soul : and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness ’ for his ’ Name's ’ sake.

-2-

4 Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will ’ fear no ’ evil : for thou art with me; thy ’

rod and thy ’ staff ’ comfort me.

5 Thou shalt prepare a table before me, against ’them that ’ trouble me : thou hast anointed my head with oil ’ and my ’ cup shall be ’ full.

6 Surely thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me, all the ’ days of my ’ life : and I will dwell in the ’ house of the ’ Lord for ’ ever.

Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’— ’ men.

Epistle: 1 Peter 2:19-25

For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did no

revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel:St John 10:11-16

The Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O Lord

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
