Welcome to the first in a series of updates about the USDA-funded Woody Biomass Harvesting & Utilization Project that is taking place in the Superior National Forest this summer.

The Community Forestry Resource Center (forestrycenter.org) is hosting a web page where you can find the most current information about the Woody Biomass Project—including harvest schedules, photos of field activity, and written project updates as they become available. This page can be found at http://www.forestrycenter.org/biomassproject.cfm . 2) Harvests Beginning Late July
The first harvests conducted as part of this project are scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 26th along the Caribou Trail in the Gunflint District of the Superior National Forest. Loggers from Forest Management Systems Cooperative will start harvesting on test sites to get a feel for the equipment and techniques.
3) Woody Biomass Harvesting Workshop and Equipment Demonstration
A workshop for loggers, natural resource professionals and others interested in the operation of woody biomass harvesting equipment is being held in Grand Marais, MN on August 7th. Both classroom presentations and field demonstrations will be a part of this program. For more information see http://www.forestrycenter.org/library.cfm?refID=88413
4) Documenting the Project
The Community Forestry Resource Center has contracted with Chris Perry, a photographer and filmmaker based in Chisholm, MN, to produce a video about the Woody Biomass Project. Chris will be conducting interviews and filming harvest activities over the summer in order to produce a 10-15 minute video that can then be used to share the process and results of this project with others.
