  1. Aged under 29 on 8th September 2018;
  2. Permanently resident within the County of Essex, UK. (This should not be an address used in term-time only.)
  3. Following a course (full or part-time) of advanced singing study, OR be about to begin such a course, OR have

achieved a Government-recognised Grade 8 Merit or above in singing and intend to pursue further professional singing training. Applicants may be required to supply further information concerning curriculum and standards of trainingtogether with singing career intentions if they do not hold a college place.

COMPETITION FOR THE 2018 AWARD

FULL DETAILS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The Freda Parry Scholarship was established in 1973 in order to assist young singers intending to follow a professional singing career. The Scholarship is offered annually and its maximum value now stands at £1,500. The competition is open to candidates who are under the age of 29 on 8thSeptember 2018 and whose permanent address is in the County of Essex, UK. The Scholarship winner will be asked to sing at a Fundraising Concert in aid of the Scholarship Fund in the Spring of 2019.

Candidates should:

EITHER be following or about to begin a course of advanced singing study (full-time or part-time) at a recognised institution of Higher Education

OR have attained a Government recognised Grade 8 Merit or above in singing and intend to continue further professional singing training.

Candidates are asked to perform a short (15 – 20 minutes) balanced recital programme of their own choice consisting of4 items, one of each of the following:

  • An aria from an oratorio (sacred or secular), mass or other extended sacred work(see note below)
  • An operatic aria or concert aria
  • A German Lied or French Mélodie
  • A British or American Art song.

(In the event of a large number of applications, a preliminary round will be held during the afternoon of 8thSeptember. Candidates will be expected to sing a 10 minute programme of their own choice which should NOT include any of the items they intend to sing in their main recital programme.)

The arias/songs may be sung in any order and the time limit should include any spoken introductions –

NB: performances will be timed and penalties will apply if 20 minutes is exceeded. The adjudicators will take into consideration the choice and variety of the programme submitted. Arias originally composed for performance with orchestra must be sung in the original key. All repertoire must be sung in the original language.The programme is to be sung from memory with the exception of the oratorio item which may be sung from the score in accordance with traditional performance practice.

Entry forms must be accompanied by:

  • A photocopy of the candidate’s birth certificate or other proof of age.
  • Proof of residency in Essex, i.e. copy of driving licence or electoral register etc.
  • Details of the advanced singing course that he/she is currently studying or on which he/she has gained a place OR a copy of the candidate’s Grade 8 Certificate in Singing.
  • Programme of songs for the competition. (This can be amended up until August 15th 2018.)
  • A typewritten curriculum vitaewith details of education and musical performances.

NB: Previous recipients of the award are not eligible to apply.

AT THE COMPETITION:

  • The competition will take place during the evening of Saturday 8th September 2018 at St. Augustine’s Church, Johnstone Road, Southend-on-Sea,Essex, SS1 3H X. In the case of a large number of entries, preliminary heats will be held during the afternoon of that day at the same venue. Candidates will be notified of the time they are required to attend by the end of July 2018.
  • The order of performance will be determined by lots drawn by the Parry Scholarship Trustees.
  • The Competition will be judged by a Panel consisting of one professional adjudicator and one or more of the Parry Scholarship Trustees; the award, if made, will be entirely at the discretion of the Panel, whose decision is final.
  • Candidates are required to provide their own accompanist; you are reminded that it is illegal to perform from photocopies of published music in copyright.
  • Copies of the music for the Panel must be provided on the day of the Competition. All original copies will be returned. (Photocopies are permissible for this purpose but will be retained and destroyed after the competition.)
  • Candidates are solely responsible for their travelling and subsistence costs and those of their accompanist.
