EFL 062 - Listening-Speaking II - Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to:

1. Understand and produce basic pronunciation patterns in English.

2. Participate in short conversations of general interest.

3. Take notes on short listening tasks.

4. Understand and report the main ideas in short listening tasks.

5. Present information/instructions about defined topics to others in a clear, organized way.

6. Participate in discussion groups.

EFL 063 - Listening-Speaking III - Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to:

1. Recognize main ideas in short audio listening segments

2. Find and understand detailed information in short audio listening segments

3. Take brief notes on short audio listening segments

4. Discuss topics and carry out tasks in small groups

5. Develop vocabulary and recognize grammatical structures related to listening tasks

6. Make a brief presentation to the class

7. Hold a brief interview outside of class on a topic related to in-class listening exercises & discussion

EFL 064 - Listening-Speaking IV - Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

1. Participate constructively in complete conversations in different circumstances

2. Participate constructively in high-intermediate level group discussion

3. Give clear oral presentations in front of the class

4. Demonstrate understandable pronunciation

5. Listen to high-intermediate taped presentations and take appropriate notes on the material

EFL 072 - Reading II - Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, a student should:

1. Have acquired selected vocabulary on academic subjects

2. Be able to scan low intermediate reading material for information.

3. Be able to guess word meaning from context in low intermediate materials.

4. Recognize main ideas in low intermediate readings.

5. Have a beginning understanding of word forms, their functions in sentences, and suffixes that

indicate various word forms.

6. Be able to summarize short, simple passages.

7. Apply material/information read to understanding simple listening passages.

8. Apply material/information read to participating in class discussions.

9. Demonstrate comprehension of low intermediate reading materials

EFL 073 - Reading III - Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, a student should have the following skills or knowledge:

(1) Ability to guess word meaning from context clues in intermediate-level reading selections

(2) Ability to guess word meaning from selected Greek and Roman prefixes, roots and suffixes

(3) Knowledge of the different parts of a standard American English dictionary entry

(4) Ability to scan intermediate-level readings for specific pieces of information

(5) Ability to skim intermediate-level readings to get an overview of the topic

(6) Ability to select the main idea of intermediate-level paragraphs and articles

(7) Ability to recognize inferences in intermediate-level paragraphs and articles

(8) Ability to recognize restatements of important ideas in intermediate-level paragraphs and articles

Using high-intermediate level reading materials:

1. Skim and scan to locate particular types of information

4. Build academic vocabulary and deduce word meanings from context.

5. Understand sequences through pronoun references, transitions, & time progression and their functions in

academic writing in English.

EFL 082 - Grammar II - Objectives

1. Use common regular and irregular verbs in present, present progressive, past and future, in both positive and negative statements.

4. Use basic expressions of quantity and articles correctly with count and non-count nouns

EFL 084 - Grammar IV - Objectives

Upon completion of this course students should be able to write correct sentences using:

1 . Modal auxiliaries in present and past, progressive and passive.

2. Gerunds and infinitives as subjects and objects.

3. Past and passive gerunds and infinitives as objects.

4. Noun clauses as subjects and objects.

5. Adverb clauses of time, cause and effect, opposition, and condition.

6. Reduction of adverb clauses of time. and cause and effect.

7. Present and past participles.

8. Prepositions.

EFL 091 - Composition I - Objectives

1. Write an informal letter & informal email using traditional letter format with a salutation and closing.

2. Correctly use commas, periods and capitalization when writing simple compositions of one or more paragraphs.

3. Write a basic paragraph with a topic sentence, several body sentences, and a concluding sentence.

4. Use simple transition words to organize written information in chronological order or in a description.

5. Use 'and' and 'but' to write compound subjects, verbs and sentences.

6. In a one-paragraph composition, use complex sentences with one independent one dependent clause.

7. Write independent-practice journal entries.

8. Revise writing using the teacher's feedback.

9. Write at least one composition with a simple introduction, one or more supporting paragraphs, and a simple conclusion.

EFL 092 - Composition II - Objectives

1) To write short (4 or more paragraphs) compositions organized with a focus on description (spatial order & classification organization) and narration (chronological order).

2) To write a short introduction with a thesis statement.

3) To write developmental paragraphs with one main idea expressed in a topic sentence.

4) To support the main ideas in a developmental paragraph with descriptive details and examples.

5) To improve editing skills; that is, to recognize basic grammar errors and be able to correct them.

EFL 093 - Composition III - Objectives

1) To write 5-6 paragraph compositions which follow the rhetorical format for

· definitions

· comparison & contrast

· description of a process

· cause & effect

· argumentation

2) To write standard introductions (including thesis statements) & conclusions

3) To write topic sentences which reflect the main idea of developmental paragraphs, and to develop support for those ideas

4) To produce clear compositions within a limited time framework (that is, typical of composition writing for the final composition in ENG 111, of standardized tests which require compositions, and of essay exams)

EFL 094 - Composition IV - Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to:

(1) use one or more "invention" techniques for generating composition ideas

(2) write a composition designed for a particular audience

(3) include clear, well-written thesis statements and topic sentences in all compositions

(4) integrate data from a survey in a composition

(5) use library sources, correct citation forms, and bibliographic information in a research composition

EFL 111 - English for Internationals I (Grammar V and Composition V combined) - Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

1. Write competent 500 word essays which focus on the following rhetorical functions: comparison and contrast, cause and effect, argumentation, classification, examples, and process.

EFL 112 - English for Internationals II (Listening-Speaking V and Reading V combined) - Objectives

1. Understand lectures on academic subjects.

2. In lectures, differentiate between main points, supporting information, and extraneous information.

3. Take down this information in organized notes.

4. Understand college-level reading texts.

5. Use advanced knowledge of word forms, grammar, and discourse markers to follow the flow of ideas in a written text.
