  1. What is Direct School Admission – Secondary (DSA-Sec) Exercise?

DSA-Sec is an admission exercise to allow participating schools to select some Primary Six students for admission to Secondary One based on their achievements and talents before the PSLE results are released. The objective of the DSA-Sec is to promote holistic education by giving participating schools greater flexibility in selecting students while holding on to the key principles of transparency and meritocracy. For students, the DSA-Sec Exercise provides them the opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to secondary schools.

  1. How much Discretionary Places will the Secondary Schools have?

  1. How much flexibility is given to Schools to select their students?

In general, schools can decide on their admission criteria, so long as they are meritocratic and transparent.

  1. What is the niche area in Punggol Secondary in this DSA-Sec Exercise?

The Niche area in Punggol Secondary School is “Building Character and School Pride Through Volleyball”.

  1. How many places can Punggol Secondary offer in DSA Exercise 2017?

Punggol Secondary is allowed to provide “Confirmed Offers” up to the maximum of 5% of the total pupils’ intake in 2017. Students who have accepted the “Confirmed Offers” will get a place in the school after Primary 6.

  1. Who can participate in the DSA-Sec Exercise 2017in Punggol Secondary School?

All Primary 6 pupils who meet the admission criteria (stated in the next paragraph below) stated in the school’s website can participate in the DSA-Sec exercise 2017.

Admission Criteria and Exercise

  1. What are the admission criteria to apply into Punggol Secondary DSA-Sec (Volleyball) 2017?

A student currently enrolled in a local national school:

(a)Must have an overall percentage of 50% at their Primary 6 Mid-Year Examination;

(b)Preferably to obtain at least a Silver Award in the Primary 4 or latest NAPFA Test;

(c)Preferably have represented school in Volleyball tournaments at zonal / national level, or is a member of the school volleyball CCA; and

(d)Must pass our Selection Test.

Returning Singaporeans or Permanent Residents/Foreign students not currently studying in local national schools must satisfy criteria (c) and (d) above. These Singapore Citizens (SC) and Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) applicants should not be more than 4 years overaged. i.e. born between 2 Jan 2001 and 1 Jan 2006. International Students (i.e. non‐SC/SPR) should not be more than 2 years overaged i.e. born between 2 Jan 2003 and 1 Jan 2006.The school will process your

application only if a letter and registration number issued by the MOE Customer Service Centre is attached.

  1. How will the students be admitted into Punggol Secondary?

Students who meet the admission criteria in paragraph 7 above will be issued a letter to inform them if they have been (1) given a Confirmed Offer, (2) placed on the Waiting List, OR (3) that the school is unable to offer them a place by 31 August 2017. Students with a confirmed offer by the school and have accepted the offer will be admitted to the school.

  1. When can the students start applying for the DSA-Sec Exercise in Punggol Secondary?

Punggol Secondary School will start inviting students for application from 08 May 2017 to 7 July2017.

  1. When will Punggol Secondary start inviting students for interview and selection?

The Selection Test is scheduled to be conducted on the 22 July 2017.

  1. What is the Selection Test about?

The Selection Test will include:

  • Scoring of students’ psychomotor skills based on an observation checklist that scores their ability in:
  • Power of jump
  • Agility
  • Reaction time
  • Ball sense
  • Demonstration of Volleyball Game skills during volleyball matches.
  • One-on-one interview by selection panel to assess the interest and commitment level, and tenacity and strength of character.
  • Priority will be given to students who have participated competitively in sports, not necessarily in volleyball.

  1. When will the students know the outcome of his choice?

Students will be informed of their DSA-Sec application results together with the release of PSLE results through their primary schools. Returning Singaporeans or PRs/Foreign students may collect their DSA-Sec results at the MOE Customers Service Centre. Students are required to report to the secondary schools admitted on the next working day for registration.

  1. Will Successful DSA-Sec candidates still have to participate in the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise?

Students successfully allocated to their DSA-Sec schools will NOT be allowed to participate in the annual S1 Posting Exercise to opt for secondary schools and will NOT be allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results. Successful DSA students are expected to honour their commitments to their posted DSA schools. Similarly, successful Singapore Sports School (SSP) DSA students are not allowed to transfer to another school, with the exception of transferring back to their posted secondary school provided to them under the S1 Posting Exercise.

  1. What happens when the students is eligible for special programmes?

Students who wish to apply for the special programme will have to submit their Secondary 1 Option Form during the centralised Secondary 1 Posting Exercise (immediately after the release of PSLE results) to their primary schools.

  1. How will students receive their DSA-Sec Results?

DSA-Sec candidates studying in MOE schools will receive their DSA-Sec results together with their PSLE results through their primary schools. Non-mainstream candidates can collect their DSA-Sec results from MOE Customer Service Centre.

  1. What happens if the students received several DSA-Sec Offers?

Students will be given School Preference Forms through their primary schools on 30 Oct 2017. The period of for submission of School Preference Forms is from 30 Oct 2017–3 Nov 2017. Students may indicate their preferences for up to 3 schools. DSA-Sec candidates who receive at least one DSA-Sec offer may indicate their school preferences, up to a maximum of three choices. You can do so online via the DSA-Sec Internet System (DSA-Sec IS) or physically at their primary schools.

  1. Can a student ask for an extension of deadline to consider the DSA-Sec offer?

No. We are unable to extend the deadline for you as we have to adhere to a tight schedule for the DSA-Sec exercise. Once a student rejects the confirmed order, the place will be given to another student in the waiting list.

  1. If I missed the deadline to accept the DSA-Sec Exercise. Can I still take up the offer after the deadline?

No. Once you miss the deadline, you will be deemed to have rejected the offer.

Support for Niche Area

  1. What has the school done so far to develop our niche area (Volleyball)?
  • Volleyball Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) is given priority in the use of school facilities and premises for training and development.
  • Participation in local competitions and Overseas Cultural and Exchange Trips have enhanced and increased students’ experience in game play, character and national education.
  • Providing bonding activities to develop character and school pride.
  • All Secondary 1 students are assessed on Volleyball Knowledge and Skill Test as part of the Physical Education Curriculum.
  1. What are your school’s plans to sustain the niche area?
  • We have a dedicated Volleyball training area in the Indoor Sports Hall that will enhance the developmental and training opportunities for our students.
  • Dedicated and committed teachers will continue to help in the Niche Volleyball Programme.
  • Academic Assistance Programme for Volleyball Teams will continue to develop students in their academic. Under teachers’ supervision and providing a conducive venue will allow students to better focus in their revision. At the same time, subject teachers are in school for them to seek help.
  • Overseas Funds will be placed aside to further develop the holistic programme for our players. Overseas Trips will continue to provide students more opportunities to experience cultural differences, building team work and character through overseas friendly matches and competition.
