JOB DESCRIPTION FOR TEACHING ASSISTANT WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR MEDICAL & LEARNING NEEDS OF A NAMED PUPIL WITH AN EDUCATION HEALTH CARE PLAN (EHCP)

Pay Scale: Coastal Academies Range 3 (Equivalent to Kent Range 3)

Please note that high needs funding for this post is linked to the named pupil and the post would cease if the pupil left or fundingwas withdrawn.

Job Purpose:

1. To give appropriate care to a named pupil with anEHCP(primaryneed medical)

2. To support the named pupil to participate fully in all aspects of her education

3. To operate as part of the SEND/AEN team with various tasks in negotiation with Headteacher

Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks:

Support for Pupil:

  • To be responsible for the care and supervision of the pupil within the school day and attend to their health care and educational needs
  • To undertake relevant training to cater for her medical and communication needs as required
  • Supervise and provide particular support for the pupil, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Assist with the development and implementation of support programmes
  • Work with parents/carers to write healthcare plans, updating them as required and at least annually. Ensure that all relevant staff have a sound knowledge of the needs of individual pupils
  • Liaise with outside agencies to include school nursing team
  • Administer daily medical care, suction and feeding and keep appropriate and accurate records
  • Administer emergency first-aid to pupils when required
  • Ensure that there is an adequate supply of specialist medical equipment relevant to an individual pupil e.g. monitoring/testing equipment, liaising with parent/carer when necessary
  • Establish constructive relationships with pupil and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
  • Provide feedback to pupil in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher

Support for Teachers:

  • Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support the pupil to achieve learning goals
  • Assist with the planning of learning activities
  • Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress & difficulties
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy, and encourage all pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers

Support for the Curriculum:

  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses
  • Undertake programmes linked to local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, recording achievement and progress and feeding back to the teacher
  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupil’s competence and independence in its use
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment / resources required to meet the relevant learning activity and assist pupil in their use

Support for the School:

Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person

Be aware of and support differences, and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop

Contribute to the overall ethos and aims of the school

Appreciate and support the role of other professionals

Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required

Participate in training and development, and performance reviews as required

Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times

Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher
