Creating a Book Jacket

Setting up your document
  1. Menu Bar > view > print layout
  2. Zoom – 50%
  3. Menu Bar > file > page setup
  4. Under Margins tab
  5. Change left and right margins to .3%
  6. Change Top and bottom to .5%
  7. Select Paper Size tab
  8. Under Paper Size
  9. Click on drop down menu
    change to legal size paper (8.5 X 14)
  10. Under Orientation
  11. Click on landscape

Click OK to close Page setup

  1. Menu bar > format > columns
  2. Type in four columns
  3. Make sure Equal column width is NOT checked
  4. Under Width and spacing – Use the scroll bar, to be sure you are in column 1. Make the width 2.” Then scroll down to column 4 and make the width 2” also
  5. Click OK to close window
  1. Click to place insertion point in first column
  2. Click on backwards P in the menu bar to turn on your “Non printing Characters” (These marks will not print – they are only guides)
  3. Click inside first column – hit enter key 3 times
  4. Menu bar > insert > Break > Column break
  5. Repeat this for the second column and third column

DO NOT IN LAST COLUMN

  1. Save your work
  2. H:/students/kidswork/your_teacher/your_bell
  3. Name your file: your initials_bookcover
  4. NEVER PUT PERIOD IN FILE NAMES – LET THE PROGRAM DO IT!

Now we are ready to start inserting information

This is the layout of the Book Jacket:

To insert clip art

Insert a clip art

Menu Bar > Insert > clip art

You can do a search by typing in the word in the search bar

ALWAYS RESIZE YOUR PICTURE BY USING THE CORNER GRAPHIC HANDLES – NOT TOP, BOTTOM OR SIDES

To position your graphic – right click on your graphic > Format Picture

Layout tab

Choose “In Front of Text”

VIP - Do not format your picture if inserting into a table cell

To insert a text box

Menu bar > insert > text box

Click and “draw” your box – stay within your column margins

To eliminate the border, right click on the border

Select “Format text box” from the pop-up menu

Colors and Lines tab

Under Line > Color > No line

Click OK

Position your text box by placing your mouse point over the border. When the 4 way directional arrow appear, click and drag your text box where you want it to go.

Hot Tips

To “nudge” your object (graphic or text box) over 1 pixel at a time use Ctrl + arrow keys
