1.  Position in the national R&D system

Kaliningrad State Technical University is the largest education institution of the Federal Fishing Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. The Faculty of Biological Resources and Nature Exploitation is the leading education centre of Russia in the field of ichthyologist and fish farmer training. Currently, the Faculty provides Bachelor, Specialist and Master training in Living Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture (Ichthyologist and Fish Farmer). The Faculty hosts the Council of Training and Methodology of the higher educational institutions of Russia in this field. Research into aquaculture, ichthyology, hydrobiology, etc. is also done at the Faculty.

2.  Main mandate

Education, research, technological development and consulting, exploitation and protection of living aquatic resources, including:

Training of fish farmers, ichthyologists and hydrobiologists. Organization and conducting of courses for improvement of professional skills in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture and fishing;

Development of the biotechnology of rearing different fish species;

Fish diseases, ichthyopathology;

Application of information systems in fisheries;

Research in fish haematology;

Fish population ecology;

Hydrobiont biodiversity;

Management of living aquatic resources;

Research in water quality of natural and artificial water bodies;

Research in fish nutrition;

Research in environmental management.

No separate budget. Financing is done from the University budget.

6.  Events organized regularly by the institute

Annual scientific conference on fisheries and ecology (The 2004 conference was held with the participation of about 100 people representing different organizations in the field of fisheries, aquaculture and ecology from Russia, Poland and other countries.)
