Serving patients having surgery at the James, UH, Ross and EEI
Patients meeting ANY of the following criteria require a thorough preoperative assessment prior to undergoing their planned procedure. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this assessment, please contact the OPAC at (614) 366-7500-option 3.
r Major Surgery: Major vascular surgery (including carotid endarterectomy), major orthopedic
surgery, thoracic, intra-abdominal, open heart, craniotomy, major spine surgery, anticipated
prolonged procedures with major fluid shifts and/or blood loss.
r Coronary artery disease, known or suspected history: (including chest pain or angina, MI,
heart bypass surgery, cardiac stents or PTCA, positive stress test, pacemaker, implantable cardiac
device (ICD), arrhythmias, or atrial fibrillation.
r Congestive heart failure (CHF), current history or symptoms; heart murmur or leaky heart
valves.
r Diabetes-poorly controlled
r Hypertension, poorly controlled i.e., SBP>160mm HG or DBP>110mm Hg
r BMI ≥ 40 or weight > 300 pounds
r Lung problems: emphysema, COPD, severe / uncontrolled asthma, recent pneumonia (< 3 months)
r Sleep apnea
r Kidney disease or failure (or Creatinine > 1.5)
r Liver disease (chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver)
r Strokes, TIAs, or blood clots in the legs or lungs (DVT, PE)
r Blood thinners (Coumadin / Warfarin, Plavix / Clopidogrel, Lovenox)
r Personal or family problems with anesthesia (malignant hyperthermia or severe nausea/vomiting)
r Cervical neck instability- difficulty moving neck or opening mouth
r History of difficult intubation or any other know anesthesia complications/problems
r Chronic or debilitating disease requiring recent hospitalization or physician care

***OPAC patient testing will be done per the Anesthesia Guidelines and individual patient assessment. We are happy to combine surgeon preop testing preferences/orders and anesthesia preop testing, please place orders as “future” testing in IHIS.
