Honors The Tempest assignment

As we complete the reading of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in class, your individual review of the text and understanding of how to read and “interpret” Shakespeare’s language is essential. To help facilitate your learning, for each act, you will need to pick a character or a theme to focus on in a two paragraph, typed, written reflection/discussion. You will need to use quotations from the text to support your observations. Your sources should be only your book, your brain, and the class. No outside sources, like the internet or other unapproved "help." Ask me if you have questions about this. Your writing should be completed as homework outside of class the night after we finish each act in class. Plan accordingly.

Questions that may help guide/start your writing:

·  What does this scene reveal about a character? Their motivation? Their values?

·  What do you think Shakespeare might have been trying to emphasize about a theme/character?

·  What do you think that modern audiences would interpret differently than audiences viewing Shakespeare’s plays at the time of their original performance?

·  What do you notice or find interesting about how a specific theme is presented?

Requirements:

·  Your writing would be typed and turned in both in hard copy and on turnitin.com by the beginning of class the day the assignment is due.

·  Two of your reviews must focus on a character of some importance, and two of your reviews must focus on an important theme in the play. This is not a discussion about what you liked or did not like, but rather an analytical reflection of academic depth. See above questions for ideas.

·  Each of your reviews must contain two paragraphs about your topic. For the purpose of this assignment, my definition of a paragraph is at least five lines of your original work, not including the quotations.

·  The quotations chosen must support the observations/discussion and must be correctly incorporated. There must be at least three quotations or partial quotations of quality for each scene.

·  Any part of the assignment that does not adhere to the guidelines will result in partial credit for the entire assignment.
