Who is required to complete a New Lawyer Training Program, and what are the basic requirements?

Attorneys admitted by examination and attorneys initially registering for corporate status on or after Nov. 1, 2008, unless otherwise exempted.

General Requirements

New attorneys must complete 12 hours of NLT instruction by the end of their first biennial reporting period. (The biennial reporting period is based on the attorney's last name. An attorney whose last name begins with a letter A through L must complete his or her educational hours by the end of each odd-numbered year and an attorney whose last name begins with letter M through Z must complete his or her educational hours by the end of each even-numbered year.)

All new attorneys must complete three hours of instruction that includes one hour of professionalism, one hour of law practice management and one hour of client funds management. In addition, new attorneys must either elect to participate in the Supreme Court's mentoring program for new lawyers OR take nine hours of designated new lawyer training instruction in one or more substantive law practice areas. (Please note that any NLT credits earned in excess of the 12 hour requirement will carry forward into the following reporting period as regular CLE.)
