Dear Colleague,
PATIENT GROUP DIRECTIONS FOR USE IN NHS LANARKSHIRE
The imminent (1st April) change in Health Board boundaries in which 21 pharmacies in the Cambuslang, Rutherglen and Northern Corridor areas of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will transfer to NHS Lanarkshire has led us to review our Patient Group Directions.
Clinically we work to consistent PGDs across Scotland so there is no change to the urgent supply PGD nor the PGD for Chloramphenicol. The issues are simply that pharmacists currently working in NHS GG&C who will transfer to NHS Lanarkshire need to sign up to these two PGDs because they are authorised on a Health Board basis. A hard copy of the Cloramphenicol PGD was circulated with the Welcome Packs last week and all pharmacies already have hard copies of the urgent supply PGD. The only action required is to fax in your authorization sheet for each of these to Anne Buchanan/Isobel Marshall on 01698 858271. I acknowledge and am grateful that several pharmacists have done this even in advance of this prompt.
The Emergency Contraception PGD is different. It contains details about child protection referral routes and these vary from Health Board to Health Board and between local authorities. The latest information is included in an updated PGD and pharmacists from the “traditional” NHS Lanarkshire pharmacies and pharmacists from the transferring pharmacies should all sign up to this update. E-copies of the updated PGD are being posted on the NHS Lanarkshire section of www.communitypharmacy.scot.nhs.uk by Thursday this week and pharmacists should download the updated version, sign the authorisation sheet and return it to Anne/Isobel Fax No:01698 858271.
As a secondary point I am aware that GPhC Inspections are requesting that pharmacies have access details for child protection and this updated PGD will aid you in this regards.
Yours sincerely
