This session will provide perspective on how to approach the doctoral program process and maximize opportunities for success. The purpose is to instill a sense of urgency in terms of academic pursuits with an understanding of work life balance needs. A portion includes aspects of time management.

This session is designed to provide a high-level view of finding a home/voice as an academic from the perspective of faculty members. In the job market, there is a ton of information asymmetry between candidates (you) and universities. Faculty with search committee experience help you to understand “insider information” about what schools are really looking for in their applicants, whether you will be ready for the job market based on this criteria, and what to do next whether you are ready for the job market or not.
Note to interested faculty presenters: We are looking for a senior faculty member who has served on a search committee and/or have in-depth knowledge of the hiring process for new faculty.

The objective of the session is to expose students to the revise and resubmit process by having them evaluate early versions of papers that either were eventually accepted for publication or are still looking for a home. The participating scholars will lead small group discussions regarding the changes made with the paper and the current status of the project.
Franklin II / Panel Session: The Nuts and Bolts of the Dissertation Process

In this panel session, MDSA members who recently completed the dissertation process will discuss the nuts and bolts of how they personally navigated this process from start to finish, tactics that worked for them, and pitfalls that they encountered. Recommended for those who are proposing or defending their dissertation in the upcoming school year.

Negotiating is a necessary skill in navigating the PhD process. Presenters will review the mechanics of negotiations (e.g. best alternatives to a negotiated agreement, reservation points), and how they may become relevant during the PhD program (e.g. negotiating authorship or graduation date). Participants will work through negotiation scenarios to in order to practice and receive feedback on negotiation skills.

Panelists will also share advice and answer questions about how you can do the same in your own adviser relationships.
