The Pocahontas County Board of Education met in Local School Improvement Council/Faculty Senate session on Monday, November 17, 2014, at 1:00 PM, at Marlinton Middle School, with the following members present:

AGENDA

On recommendation of the superintendent and motion of Mr. Tritapoe, seconded by Ms. Stewart, the Board unanimously approved the agenda.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Dr. Bechtel recognized Mr. Riley and the staff of Marlinton Middle School for their team spirit and positive attitudes.

INFORMATION/REPORTS/UPDATES…
LOCAL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL/FACULTY SENATE

Joseph Riley, principal of Marlinton Middle School, welcomed the Board and thanked them for coming.

Mr. Riley introduced Mr. Lynne Jordan, Local School Improvement Council president.

Mr. Jordan expressed the concerns of the Local School Improvement Council to the Board, beginning with the walk-in refrigerator and necessary repairs. Mr. Jordan noted that several items in the refrigerator have been lost due to the extreme fluctuations in temperatures.

The Board indicated that the repair of refrigerator has already been approved.

Mr. Riley gave the Board Members a tour of the school and allowed them to observe classroom activities.

APPROVAL TO AUTHORIZE PAYMENT OF VENDOR LISTING OF CLAIMS …

On recommendation of the superintendent and motion of Ms. Stewart, seconded by Mrs. Hefner, the Board unanimously approved to authorize payment of vendor listing of claims in the amount of $1,536.48.

PERSONNEL

On recommendation of the superintendent and motion of Mrs. Hefner, seconded by Ms. Stewart, the Board unanimously approved the following professional and service personnel.

Green Bank Elementary – Middle School:
EMPLOYMENT: / ELLA M. TAYLOR, as Athletic Director at Green Bank Elementary – Middle School, effective for the 2014-2015 season, at a supplement of $750 (NOTE: Position pending on sufficient number of players to make a team).
Marlinton Middle School:
EMPLOYMENT: / DENISE SHARP, as Project Site Coordinator (Project SPLASH) at Marlinton Middle School, at $23 per hour, up to 9 hours per week, up to 25 weeks, retroactive to October 28, 2014.
EMPLOYMENT: / Of the following as Project Math Tutor/STEM Instructor (Project SPLASH) at Marlinton Middle Schools, at $20 per hour, 7 hours per week (1 hour planning, 2 hours instruction daily – 3 days per week), for up to 25 weeks retroactive to October 28, 2014 (position to be divided equally between two individuals):

WARE, as Teacher of Electricity at Pocahontas County High School, at state basic salary based on degree and experience, effective January 10, 2015, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Term of employment: 100 days (NOTE: Term of employment shall be 200 days each year thereafter).
Pocahontas County Schools:
EMPLOYMENT: / MARY P. DAWSON, as Parent Involvement Coordinator for Pocahontas County Schools (assignment: Hillsboro Elementary School), effective November 19, 2014 through May 8, 2015, at $20 per hour, not to exceed 250 hours – not to exceed $5,000. Schedule to be determined by Director of Federal Programs, but cannot be extended beyond May 8, 2015.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, December 8, 2014 beginning at 7:00 PM at the Pocahontas County Board of Education Conference Room.

NEXT LSIC/FACULTY SENATE/BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The next LSIC/Faculty Senate/Board of Education Meeting will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 beginning at 1:00 PM at Pocahontas County High School.

STUDENT DISCIPLINARY HEARING

The Pocahontas County Board of Education then met in Closed Student Disciplinary Hearing on Monday, November 17, 2014, at 2:30 PM, at the Pocahontas County Board of Education Conference Room.

EXPULSION HEARING

On recommendation of the superintendent and motion of Mr. Tritapoe, seconded by Mrs. Beverage, the Board unanimously agreed to enter in to an expulsion hearing for a violation of WV Code 18A-5-1a, West Virginia State Board Policy 4373, Pocahontas County Discipline Code and Pocahontas County Schools Student Code of conduct, recommending expulsion for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Upon completion of the Executive Session, on motion of Mr. Tritapoe, seconded by Ms. Stewart, the Board unanimously agreed to return to the regular agenda.

EXPULSION

On recommendation of the superintendent and motion of Mrs. Beverage, seconded by Mrs. Hefner, the Board unanimously approved the expulsion of a Pocahontas County student for a violation of WV Code 18A-5-1a, West Virginia State Board Policy 4373, Pocahontas County Discipline Code and Pocahontas County Schools Student Code of conduct for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year.
