Before students begin reading pages 1-3
This chapter book, The Little Rabbits Help, is the first of the four chapter books in Dr. Cupp Readers & Journal Writers. Students started this program as non-readers, and now they are reaching the level of being not only readers, but good ones! They not only read fluently, but also comprehend and interact with text.
As students read about the little rabbits that like to help others, they might like to start a class or group project. (See page 147 for suggestions)
Procedure: Introduction of New Sight Words, or, for, start, warm, rabbit, and mom The New Sight Words are easily sounded out. Students should independently sound out the words and then take turns saying them quickly. The teacher may write the New Sight Words on index cards and randomly call on students to say the words as quickly as possible.
As always, the Tricky Words from Readers 1-30 should be practiced as frequently as possible.
Oral Language Lesson for Reader 42 p. 1
Refer to Manual p. 148 for higher order thinking and comprehension questions.
Section B- -Hop’n Pop Sight Words-
1/3 of the group time
Materials: timer, Reader #42 p.4-6 Dr. Cupp Readers & Journal Writers Part 2, p. 149
Objective: TLW read sight words with speed and accuracy.
If there are a few students in the group who always seem to “Catch Hop’n Pop” with very little practice, raise your expectations. When working with these students, ask them to begin on page 4 and if the timer has not sounded, keep going on page 5 until the timer sounds. To calculate their scores, add the words said from page 4 and 5 together. Stop students if they make more than four errors. This game is Double Hop’n Pop.
