The safety practices in the Workplace Safety Commitment are designed to help prevent serious injuries to yourself and others. The State Library takes an active interest in the safety of its employees and volunteers. Please take a few minutes to review this brief overview of work area precautions.

Transportation and parking options for Volunteers

Discuss work procedures with your manager before beginning work assignments.

Read and review OSL emergency procedures.

Know how to report and respond to emergency, proper evacuation procedures and designated evacuation meeting area.

Know and follow security procedures.

Correct or immediately report any unsafe conditions or practices to your manager.

Report building maintenance issues to the Administration office.

Maintain your work area. Keep it clean and organized.

Share ideas and suggestions on how to improve the safety environment with your manager.

Take advantage of safety training when available.

Watch footing to avoid slips and falls. Wipe up spilled fluids immediately. Keep walkways clear of debris, tools and materials.

Watch your back! Get help when lifting heavy loads. Use proper positioning – keep your back straight, lift with your legs, and carry the load close to your body. Never twist your back while lifting or carrying a load.

Watch your balance when pulling, pushing, or prying – especially in an elevated work area.

No horseplay.

Do not jump from elevated areas.

Secure ladders before climbing. Check for defects. Always face the ladder when going up or down.

Do not use unstable objects (buckets, chairs, tables, etc.) for work platforms or ladders.

Wear protective equipment (eye guards, gloves, etc.) as required, for your own protection.

Wear suitable shoes in good repair.

Verify electrically powered equipment is properly grounded. Notify your manager if electrical cords look unsafe.

Do not operate, repair or adjust mechanical or electrical equipment unless you are authorized and qualified.

Use the proper tools when doing any job.

Obey traffic regulations while driving vehicles or equipment.

Read caution labels on cleaning agents, solvents or flammables. Understand the hazards involved, and take the necessary precautions. Adequate ventilation is a primary concern.

Transportation & Parking Options for Volunteers at the State Library

1.  Parking Spaces – FREE using a Parking Pass (first come – first served)

2.  Parking Meter Key State meters – FREE (located in Reference Room or in TBABS)

3.  Bus Pass – FREE all day pass for days of scheduled volunteer time.

VOLUNTEER TRANSPORTATION & PARKING AGREEMENT

All information you provide to the Volunteer Office is confidential – this includes your vehicle information. Vehicle Information is only used for the Library to monitor our spaces for volunteer use only.

Bus Pass – Cherriots Salem/Keizer Transit

§  Bus passes and are to be used only for the day that you volunteer at the Library.

§  Bus passes will be distributed on an as needed basis.

Parking Permit

§  Parking permit is distributed to you when you begin your volunteer service to the Library. Place the permit in a visible place on the driver’s side of the dash board.

§  The State Library has five parking spaces. They are located on the north side of the Library in the Chemeketa St. turn-around spaces #2,3,4,5. Also, space number J-13, on the upper level of the southwest wall of the underground parking structure, access from Chemeketa Street.

Parking Meter Key

§  Parking Meter Key is available to use at designated metered parking spaces in the underground Capitol Mall Parking structure only – keys are located in the Reference Room and in the TBABS office.

§  Place reverse side of parking permit on the driver’s side of the dash board. The reverse side of the parking permit has an authorization statement to allow you to park temporarily at a meter until you retrieve the parking meter key.

§  Use the parking meter key to install time in the meter. Return the parking meter key and note the amount used in the log.

PLEASE NOTE…The State Library is not authorized to pay any fines incurred for illegal parking. (Oregon Revised Statue 292.295). The volunteer will need to settle their own parking fines.

The Parking Permit is issued to the volunteer, not the vehicle. You can move it from one vehicle to another. Please list all vehicles you will use.
YEAR & MODEL COLOR LICENSE PLATE # / Bus Passes are issued on an as needed basis for the number of days you are scheduled to volunteer at the State Library. An All-Day Bus Pass is good for riding the Cherriots bus system for the entire day it is used.

By signing this document I agree to abide by the above stated procedures for the type of transportation or parking I select to use. I also agree to return any un-used bus passes and/or the parking permit upon the discontinuation of my volunteer service to the State Library.
