Long Term Planning Year 6
Autumn Term 1 (8weeks) / Description / Big WriteSuperheroes - biographies / 2 weeks / Students read a selection of autobiographies and biographies to revise the features of these types of texts. They should then create a superhero and write a biographical account of their life. / Recount – ‘the day I woke up with a superpower’
Superheroes – comic strips / 2 weeks / Read comic strips revising the structure of stories, comparing to other stories, e.g. fairytales, analysing language. Write a comic strip starring their superhero.
Superheroes – newspaper reports / 2 weeks / Analyse the structure and features of journalistic writing. Write a report about their superhero’s most recent heroic act. / Newspaper Article
Argument / 2 weeks / Students read a selection of balanced arguments to find the features of discussion writing. Carry out a formal debate on a controversial issue. Write an argument on a subject of their choice. / PDERPP (plan, draft, edit, revise, proof-read, present) a balanced argument
Autumn Term 2 (7 weeks)
Fiction genres & story openers / 5 weeks / Discuss different genres of children’s literature and identify the features of them. Compare different genres. Write a short story including the features of a particular genre. / Big write - Story opener
PDERPP their short story
Christmas / 2 weeks / Students prepare a performance of a Christmas Carol – revise the features of script writing, persuasion (adverts) and design a program for the performance.
Spring Term 1 (6 weeks) / Description / Big Write
Mr Men stories / 2 weeks / Students produce a short story in the style of the Mr Men books with a focus on sentence structures and punctuation.
The Iron Man or Tom’s Midnight Garden / 4 weeks
Spring Term 2 (5 weeks)
SPOOCS / 3 weeks / Revise the features of a range of non-fiction texts / Dependant on the type of texts that you feel students need.
Reading Revision / 2 weeks / Include reading poetry and other text types that students need to revise
Summer Term 1 (6 weeks) / Description / Big Write
Revision of exam skills in preparation for SATs
SATs / 13th – 17th May
Theme Park Project / A speaking and listening unit where students design a theme park, working to deadlines, practising group work and negotiation skills and revising persuasion.
Summer Term 2 (7 weeks)
Harry Potter (Into the Unknown) / 7 weeks / This is a joint project with Science and Maths that has been moved from Year 7 into Year 6. It focuses on developing and equipping pupils with the skills that they will need in Year 7. Students read extracts from Harry Potter, developing their reading skills, especially PEE: point, evidence, explanation
