A Separate Peace—CREATIVE NOVEL PROJECT

You will complete ONE of the following project options… DUE 2/8/13

I.  Movie Poster + Abstract

  1. You will create an 11x14 (minimum) movie poster. Your poster will look like an authentic, real, movie poster. You must draw the poster yourself (a computer design will not be accepted). You must include the movie/novel title, an image or images, the author. Then, you must list the information that exists at the bottom of a movie poster (persons starring in the film, direction, rating, etc.). You should have enough going-on on the movie poster to constitute writing a one page abstract required for the project. Try to avoid negative space, if possible. (70 pts)
  1. You will write a one page abstract explaining your poster, why you chose to create it like you did, how the images you drew, etc. relate to the novel, its characters and settings, the themes, and symbolic meaning in the novel. (30pts)

II.  Comic Strip + Abstract

  1. You will create a comic strip (10 comic spaces/squares) portraying the storyline of A Separate Peace. Your comic strip should be very detailed, artistic *NO WHITE SPACE* and should convey the major aspects of the entire plot in just 10 spaces. Each space should have a caption explaining the story. There should be some dialogue in the comic. Captions and dialogue can be typed and pasted. Artwork must be done by hand. (70pts)

III.  Sports Essay

a.  Consider the effects of sports and athleticism in the novel, particularly in how characters view themselves and others.

b.  Use the following set of questions to interview several athletes at this school. In a 3-4 page typewritten essay, relate your findings to your thoughts about sports and athleticism in the novel. (100pts)

i.  What motivates you most when you are playing a sport?

ii. Do excelling in sports and excelling in academics affect your self-esteem in different ways?

iii.  Would you rather that other people see you more as a fine athlete or a fine student? Why?

iv.  Are you a different person when you play sports? (Are you more of your true self or less like your true self when you play sports?)

v. How does dominance in a sport affect the personal relationships of those who play that sport together?

vi.  What does winning mean to you and what does losing mean to you?

IV.  Poetry Booklet + Abstract

a.  Write a series of five poems addressing the novel’s central cause and effect themes, symbolism, characters, settings, incidents, etc. Each poem should have a title, should be original and creative and should have original artwork to accompany it. (70pts)

b.  You will write a one page abstract explaining your poems, why you chose to create them like you did, how the words you wrote, etc. relate to the novel, its characters and settings, the themes, and symbolic meaning in the novel. (30pts)
