Stephanie grew up in Michigan where she graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in marketing. Later, she decided to become a classroom teacher and pursued her teaching license at Western Carolina University (WCU). During her student teaching semester at Asheville High School, she was killed in an automobile accident on April 17, 1997, her last day of student teaching. Family and friends have established this scholarship fund in her memory.
The purpose of the fund is to provide support for Western Carolina University student teachers who have proven themselves to be deserving. The amount of the award is $...... , and the award will be given to one student teacher each semester beginning in Spring 1998. (Award was originally $500 per semester, but as of spring 2012, recipients will be awarded based upon the actual amount available in the fund).
Selection of the recipients of this award shall be as follows:
a. / Candidates shall be considered and selected by the WCU Scholarship Selection Committee with recommendations from the Teacher Education Council. Eligible candidates must be nominated by the department head of the student’s major at WCU and by one other faculty member in the department.b. / First preference shall be given to eligible candidates who have graduated from Asheville High School, second preference to graduates of other Buncombe County High Schools, and last preference to other WCU students.
c. / Eligible candidates must be accepted and enrolled at Western Carolina University as full-time students.
d. / This award is for student teachers only during their student teaching semester.
e. / This award is not renewable, but is intended to go to a different student teacher each semester.
f. / Eligible candidates must have a demonstrated financial need.
g. / Eligible candidates must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher.
