MAY RUN

SUNDAY 22 MAY 2005

50 years ago - November 3, 1951

Evesham: One of Winston Churchill's first eight appointments to his new Government, announced last Saturday, was that of General Lord Ismay, of Wormington Grange, Broadway, to the office of Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations. Later, with the other ministers, Lord Ismay went to Buckingham Palace, where he took the oath of allegiance and was sworn a member of the Privy Council.

That was 53 years ago, but now General Lord Ismay’s magnificent former home is occupied by his Great Grandson, John Evetts.

Wormington Grange is a beautiful manor house, set in the heart of the Cotswolds. It is NEVER open to the public but we have been granted this rare opportunity to be Mr Evetts’ guests for lunch where we will learn about his connections with the formidable Mr. Churchill, more about the magnificent house and the day Bridget Jones came to visit!

After a drive through some delightful countryside, wending our way through some beautiful Cotswold villages, we will stop at Wormington Grange where we will receive a glass of Pimms or Fruit Punch on arrival. We hope to be able to line-up our beautifully polished cars for a photo opportunity in front of the house. We will be greeted by John who tells some wonderful stories about the history of the house and his family and we will be given the chance to see some personal Churchill memorabilia. We will then be invited in for a two-course buffet lunch with coffee, carefully prepared by Ann, John’s Wife.

After lunch, we are then back on the road, heading deeper into the heart of the Cotswolds and finishing at a country pub for some well deserved beer or cider, whichever takes your fancy.

If you are interested, we will need to know numbers by 3 March 2005.

We have agreed a price of £22 per person for lunch on a minimum number of 10 cars

Please can you let Jon and Ellie know ASAP so that this fantastic day can go ahead.
