Afterhehelmedhiscriticallyacclaimed2007directorialdebut,MichaelClayton,writer/directorTonyGilroydecidedtoreturntothearenaofcorporatedirtytricks...butthistimewithaneyetowardromance.Hecreatedastoryfilledwithtwistsandturns,usingthebackdropofacutthroatracebetweenrivaltitansvyingtobethefirsttobringamiracleproducttomarket.Theheartofthestory,however,istheemotionalwarfarebetweenapairofromanticallychallenged,strong-willedloverswhohappentobeoneithersideofthecorporatebattle...orsoitseems.

TheideaforDuplicitystartedwithGilroy’sfascinationwiththeintricaciesofindustrialespionage.HisyearsofresearchasthearchitectofthescreenplaysintheblockbusterBournefranchisehadintroducedhimtomanypeopleintheintelligencecommunity,andhehadnoticedthatmanyofthemhadrecentlygoneintotheprivatesector.Gilroycraftedanimblescriptsetinthisworldthatcombinedelementsofthescrewballcomedywiththeplotreversalsofaclassiccaper.

Thefilmmakerdesignedacoldwarbetweentwogiantcorporationsinwhichthespiesareactuallytryingtodupetheiremployers.Heconstructedanintricatewebofdeceitbetweentherivalmagnates,andheinsertedagentsintothemixwhoseloveisashighstakesastheschemeitself.

Thisstar-crossedpairisex-CIAagentClaireStenwickandformerMI6operativeRayKoval.Gilroyunderscoresthattheirpersonalentanglementsarecomplicatingtheirjobs,andtheconstantdeceitmakesithardtoknowwheretheystandwithoneanother.Hesays,“Theynevertellthetruth.Everybody’sgamingeverybody;everythingisconstantlynotwhatitseems.”

WemeetClaireandRaythroughaseriesofflashbacksthattracktheirrelationship-beginningwiththeirfirstencounterinDubaiin2003andtakingusthroughtheplottingoftheirbigheistinManhattanoftoday.Whenheimaginedthecouple,onecuriousquestionkeptcomingtothefilmmaker’smind:“Howdoscorpionsmakelove?”Oftheidea,Gilroyelaborates:“Iwonderedwhathappensiftwopeoplefallinlovewhoarebothprofessionalliars.It’sreallyhardforthem;whoelseisthereforthem?They’retheirownspecies.”

Thefirsttimetheymeet,then-MI6operativeRayissimplyamarkforCIAagentClaire.SheseduceshimataconsulatepartyinDubai,drugshimandthenransackshisroomtostealEgyptianAirDefencecodes.ElaboratesGilroy’sproductionpartner,producerJenniferFox,ofthesetup:“ClaireleavesRaywiththissmileonhisface.He’sbothcompletelytakenwiththiswomanandincrediblyfrustrated.Heneedstofindher.TheymeetagaininRome,havealostweekendanddecidetoworktogetherandleavetheirjobswiththeCIAandMI6andgoprivate...tocashinandhaveonebiggiantscorethatwillallowthemtobetogether.”

ForDuplicitytobeplausible,Gilroyknewthestakesforthecharactershadtobeashighastheywouldbeinanactualcoldwar.Thatmeantimaginingaracetopatentadrugsohotlyindemandthatitwouldtipthemarketforanypatentholderandrendercompetitorsimpotent.Thefilmmakerelaborates:“Weneededsomethingeverybodywaschasing,inwhichthestakeswerereallyhigh-theholygrailofeverythingfinancially.”

ProducerFoxagreedwithhisinstincts.“OneofTony’sgreatstrengthsiscreatingcharacterswhoarestrong,dynamicandsmart,”shenotes.“Ithinkhe’sdonethatherewithClaireandRay.Audienceswillhavefunwiththefilmandenjoypuzzlingoutthestory.Inthesamewaythatthecharactersareconningoneanother,Tonyisplayingacongamewithus,andthesurprisesdon’tletupuntilthelastmoment.”

WhenhecreatedhismaincharactersforDuplicity,Gilroyimaginedthetwoloversasunabletobehonestaboutanything,especiallytheirfeelings.Heneededtofindperformerswhowerebelievableasspyrivalsandromanticallycomplicated.JuliaRobertsandCliveOwenweretheperfectpairing.RobertswasaskedtocomeontotheprojectandplayClaireStenwick,BurkettRandle’sassistantdirectorofcounterintelligence(secretlyreportingtoOmnikrom).OwenwasbroughtonasRayKoval,anex-MI6agentwhonowservesasClaire’scontactofficer(i.e.,handler)atOmnikrom.

Abouttheiron-screenpairing,Foxnotes,“Duplicityisreminiscentofacertainkindofglamourfromfilmsofthepast,andsoitwasterrifictohavesuchglamorousmoviestarsatthecentre.JuliaandClivehavethekindofchemistrythatnocostumedesign,productiondesignorlocationcanprovide.”

Roberts’partinDuplicitymarkedaninterestingdeviationfromotherrolesinherbodyofwork.InGilroy’sscript,ClaireandRayhavebriefromanticinterludesinmultiplecitiesacrossmultipletimezones.ForRoberts,playingajet-settingsuper-spywasanintenseexperienceasthecrewcraftedscenessetinvariouslocalesfromRomeandDubaitoClevelandandZurich.Indeed,shefeltasifsheandOwenwereactingin,“littlebubbles...littlecapsulesthatweperformedwithin.”Fortunately,herlong-timefriendwasalongforthewildride.

Fromthisseason’sTheInternationaltosuchthrillersasInsideManandTheBourneIdentity,someofCliveOwen’smostnotableroleshavedelvedintosuspenseandtheft.HecametoDuplicitythroughthefriendshipofanotheroneofJuliaRoberts’leadingmen,GeorgeClooney.ClooneyintroducedOwentohisMichaelClaytondirectorandrecommendedhimfortheroleofRayKoval.“I’dwrittenforCliveinthefirstBournemovie,butIhadn’tmethim,”saysGilroy.“I’dbeenwatchinghisworkandthoughthewasjustamazing.WhenGeorgeintroducedus,Iwentrightawayforhimforthefilm.”

Afterreadingthescreenplay,themanwhomFoxdescribesasfullof“CaryGrantcharmandcharisma”waseagertoworkontheproject.“Ifinishedthelastpageofthescriptandgrabbedthephoneandcalledmyagentandsaid,‘Thisistheone.Thisisthescript,’”remembersOwen.“Ihadaveryhuge,strong,instinctiveresponse.Ithoughtthewritingwasbrilliantandwasverykeentogetinvolved.”

WorkingwithRobertsagainwasacarrotforOwen,aswasbeingdirectedbythemanwhoenvisionedthesourcematerial.“OneofthehugeattractionsformetodothisfilmwastogettheopportunitytosaythiskindofdialoguewithJulia.It’ssowellwrittenthat,insomeways,youdon’thavetomakethatmanydecisionsasanactor.Youhavetositinitlikeaverycomfortablecarandjustdriveit,becausetherhythmsareallthere.It’sajoywhenyou’vegotthatkindoflanguagetoplaywith,andtoplayitwithsomeonelikeJulia,whoisfantasticwiththistypeofmaterial.”

OnpartneringwithGilroy,Owencommends:“Hewritesbrilliantdialogue.Ittripsalong,andit’sgotgreatrhythm.Itfeelsnatural.Withinthreepagesofreadingthisscript,Iwasexcitedbythedialogueandcouldn’twaittogotowork.It’sallthereinfrontofyou,andit’sveryclearwhat’srequired.Theadvantageofawriter/directoristhathe’sonsetandcanexplainhisinitialimpulseswhenhewrotethescript.That’saverynicethingforanactor.

“Attheendoftheday,it’sfunny,it’switty,it’sverybuoyantandit’sunusual,”hecontinues.“It’saguyandwomanwhoareinlove,buttheyarguealotandtheymistrusteachother-aswellasbeingcrazyabouteachother-andthatlendstoareallyentertainingexperiencefortheaudience.”

DuplicityopenswithClaire’sandRay’semployersracingtowardoneanotheronarain-soakedairplanetarmac-preparingtobeatthehelloutofeachother.ToplayHowardTully,theZen(yetvindictive)headofindustrialgiantBurkettRandle,theproductioncastTomWilkinson.TheveteranBritishperformer,whoseworkwithGilroyonMichaelClaytonearnedhimanOscarnomination,wasmatchedwithfellowJohnAdamsco-starPaulGiamatti,whowasbroughtaboardtoplayOmnikrom’sübervengefulCEODickGarsik.Thetwo,freshoffGoldenGlobewinsforthecelebratedHBOminiseriesevent,broughttolifewhatFoxcalls“thetortoiseandthehare”methodsofrulingtheirempires.

SaysGilroyofWilkinson:“Tomjustmakeslifesoeasy.Wetoldhimabouttheopeningfightscene,inwhichhewouldhavetoparticipateinachoreographedfightwithPaul,andhewashappytodoit.Fromthemomentthathesays,‘Yes,’ifyou’rethedirectorandwriter,youcanimmediatelyrelax.”

Toprepareforhisrole,GiamattiwasaskedbyhisdirectortowatchStanleyKubrick’s1964masterpiece,thenihilisticcomedyDrStrangelove.GilroyfeltGiamatticouldinformhischaracterbyseeinghowGeorgeCScottplayedtheunflappableGeneral“Buck”Turgidson.SaysGilroy,“ThereferenceIgavePaulwasthathehastobeawinnerinthisthingallthewaythrough.IwantedhischaractertohavethatsameconfidencethatGeorgeCScotthad.”

WhenitcametimetoplaythemegalomaniacDickGarsik,GiamattierasedallthecompassionhehadfosteredforanddeliveredinhisportrayalofJohnAdams.Hedescribeshisexperienceonset:“PlayingacorporateguyislikeplayingakinginaShakespeareanplay:you’remasterofeverything.Ihavetoswitchintothemind-setofnotcaringaboutanybodyaroundmeandbelievethey’rejustgoingtodowhateverItellthemtodo.”

Sohisco-starswouldbeabletonailthetempooftheirrat-a-tatdialoguepriortoshooting,GilroyspentaweekrehearsingsceneswithRobertsandOwen.“You’reprospectingallthetimeanddesperateforthingstohappenthatarenotplanned,”hesays.“It’shappenedhere.ThechemistrybetweenCliveandJuliaisreallystrong,andit’ssmart.”

Robertswelcomedtheextraweektoprepareforthefilmandslipinto,asGilroyphrases,“thewardrobeofhercharacter.”Shealsoappreciatedtheluxuryoftimetorehearseforarole,versusjumpingrightintoit.BothRobertsandOwenrespectedthatClaireandRayhavepreparedforthisheistforyearsandweredeterminedtohaveeverylook,nuanceandminutedetailinplace.Theywilldoanythingnottorisklosing$40million.Indeed,itwouldtakeeveryminuteofrehearsaltimefortheactorstopreparetodeliverGilroy’slinesjustasrapid-fireastheywerewritten.

Toputhiminthemind-setofthecontrolfreakGarsik,GiamattiwassenttoanUpperEastSidemen’sbarbershopforatasteofthepamperedlifeonewouldexpectamogultoenjoy.ExplainsJenniferFox:“Paulissodown-to-earth,nottheguywhowouldbedoingthisonhisown.Wewantedhimtogetthemanicureandhaveashaveinoneofthoseold-fashionedmen’sclubs-tohavethatpristine,corporatefeeling.”

TheopeningsequenceofthefilmhasourtwoCEOsracingtowardoneanother.WilkinsonwasgametorehearsethefightinadancestudiowithGiamatti.Tosetthestage,TullyandGarsikhavedisembarkedfromtheirprivatejets,havelefttheirentouragesbehindandlaunchintoaplaygroundbrawl.Toprepareforthisscene-ultimatelyshotinanairlinehangarinUpstateNewYork-thetwomengrappledaroundcomicallyonwrestlingmats.RecallsFox,“Weplannedeverymovewithastuntco-ordinator,andweusedpaddingontheground.There’sthismomentwhenTompicksupPaul,andhe’sintheair,thenlandsontheground.Theirfistsareflying;it’soutofcontrolandfantastic.”

Design

ItwasimportanttoGilroyforthecompetingcompaniestohaveadistinctlookandfeel.BurkettRandlewasdesignedtopresentanidentitythatwasverycleanandstark,becauseitscounterintelligenceagencywasunderground,darkandbuzzingwithactivityandhigh-techspysystems;itwasbuilttofeellikeaclinicalbunker.Incontrast,theOmnikromunitwasmoreacollageoftexture,pattern,layersandtransparencies.

SaysproductiondesignerKevinThompsonofthestepshetookwiththefilmmakers:“Youstartwithverybasic,rudimentaryideas,likeBurkettRandleisgoingtobewhiteandminimal,andtheirthemecolourisgoingtobeblue.TheOmnikromteamisgoingtobetheredteam,andtheyaregoingtobemuchmorehigh-techwithlayersoftextureandgreysandnowhiteorblueatall.Oddlyenough,BurkettRandle’slogoendedupbeingblue,andOmnikrom’slogowasred.”

ThompsonhasahighregardforGilroy’saesthetics.“Tony’sextremelyvisualandveryspecificinwhathelikes:cleanlines,restfulcompositionsandfairlymasculinedesigns,”hesays.“Becausehe’sawriter,hecanarticulatewhathelikesvisually;it’sarealassettothedesigner.”

ShootingonLocation

BurkettRandleandOmnikromarebothheadquarteredinGilroy’shometownofNewYorkCity,whilethefilm’sflashbackstakeusintoClaireandRay’ssecretrendezvouscities-from,chronologically,Dubai,RomeandLondontoMiami,ClevelandandZurich.PrincipalphotographyforDuplicitybeganinManhattan,thenthecompanymovedtotheAtlantisResortintheBahamasforoneweekofshooting.ItspentthefinalweekofproductioninRome,whereClaireandRayfirstfellinloveandbegan,asGilroyputsit,“stealinglittlemoments.”Thompsonhadtheenviablejobofcreatingsetsinsomeofthemostfamousbuildingsandlocationsintheworld.

AboutthedecisiontoshootinManhattan,Thompsonoffers,“ItwasalwaysimportanttohaverealNewYorkstreetsandclassicNewYorklocations,butnotshoottheminatraditionalHollywoodway.”OneoftheearliestscenesinthefilmshotinGrandCentralStation,whichwasfilmedatthepedestrianlevelforagreatersenseofurgency.SeveraliconicNewYorkbuildingswereusedforinteriorandexteriorshotsoftherivalcompany’soffices.Forexample,theroofsoftheMetLifeBuildingandRockefellerCentrewereusedtocaptureestablishingshotsoftheBigApple.DPElswitandhisteamwereespeciallypleasedtobeamongthefirstfilmmakerstolensthecitywiththenewPanavisionG-Serieslenses.

“GrandCentralwasimportant,aswasthebigshoppingsceneinLordTaylorwhereClivefinallycatchesupwithJulia,”Thompsonsays.“BeingonFifthAvenueinmidtown,CentralPark,theChaseManhattanBankBuilding,thetopflooroftheCiticorpBuilding,LeverHouse,theSeagramBuilding...thesearethemostbeautiful,classicpiecesofarchitecturewehaveinthecity,andweshotinthem.”

OneofthemorechallenginglocationstosecurewasspaceintheSeagramBuilding.TheproductionintendedittoserveasthepowercentrefortheheadofBurkettRandle.ProducerKerryOrentexplains:“TheSeagram’slocationallowedTonytopositionHowardTully’sofficeatthecentreoftheMidtownManhattancanyonofcorporateandfinancialpower.ThelocationgaveTonytheopportunitytopresentTully’sofficewithinacertaindistancetohisarchrival’sOmnikrombuilding.Atthetimeoffilming,itwasverydifficulttofindemptyofficespaceinmidtown,especiallyinfamousarchitecturaliconslikeSeagram’s.Aftermonthsofsearching,KevinThompsonfoundarare,emptyspaceinthatbuilding.WithTony’ssupport,KevintransformedanunfinishedspacethathadwireshangingdownandSheetrockfallingoverintoaperfectlydesignedofficeforTully.”

FilmingRay’spursuitofClairethroughGrandCentralStationmadetheSeagramBuildingpreplooklikeawalkthroughCentralPark.SharesOrentoftheexperienceofco-ordinatingwitheveryonefromtheMetroNorthTransitAuthoritytoNYPD:“AtGrandCentral,wehadlessthanfivehourstoshootacomplicatedscenewithhundredsofextras...beforethousandsofGrandCentralcommutersstartedarriving.Wewererequiredtostartat4a.m.onaSundaymorning.ItwastheonlywindowoftimethatMetroNorthcouldallowustohavesomecontrolofthevastspace.By9a.m.,wehurriedtocompletethesequence.Wecouldn’tstopthetrainsfromcomingortelltravellersthattheycouldn’tpassthroughthestation.

“Itwasalotofplanningforweeksinadvance,”Orentcontinues,“butwithalotofcooperationandTony’swillingnesstoworkwithourlimitations,hedesignedanamazingshotthatstartsontheclockinGrandCentralStationandcomesdowntorevealClivediscoveringJulia.”

Additionally,NewYorkservedasawealthofunexpectedlocationsforourjet-settingspies.TheinteriorofthehotelsinLondon,RomeandDubaiwereshotinthecity,withestablishingshotsofthoselocalesaccomplishedbysecondunits.

Romewasthefinalstopintheproductionshoot.Inthiscity,ClaireandRayreconnect-inaflashbacksequence-threeyearsaftertheyfirstmetinDubai.Theadvanceteamspentmonthslookingforidealspotsinwhichtolens,accordingtoOrent.Herecalls:“ThelocationsthatTonyselectedinRomewerebasedonalongprocessofscoutingandworkingwiththeItaliangovernmenttogettheproperapprovalstofilmintheoldpartofthecity.OneofourprincipallocationsforfilmingwastheplazaadjacenttothePantheon.ItistheperfectsettingforthesequencewhereClivediscoversJuliawalkingacrosstheplaza.Ittookalongtimetosecurethislocation.Wewerenotsurethatwewouldgetapermittofilmintheplazabecauseitissuchabigtouristattraction.OurItalianproductionteamspentmonthsworkingwiththegovernmentauthoritiestogetapprovaltoshootthere.”

Gilroyfelttheseexteriorsneededtorepresenttheclassic,romanticplaceshefellinlovewithduringhisvisitstotheregion.DesignerThompsonelaborates:“WescoutedatthePiazzaNavonaandthePantheon,andwewentintotheJewishghetto.Wewantedaromanticsettingthatstartedbigandthengoesthroughthealleywaysandintoamoreintimatepiazza,thePiazzaMargana-theclassicoldsectionofthetown.Tonylovesitandfantasizedaboutmakingamoviethere,soitwaswhereCliveandJuliahadtohavetheirscene.”

ThoughthecrewshotextensivelyinRome,theflashbacksceneinClaireandRay’sgrandRomanhotelsuitewasfilmedattheJamesAandFlorenceVanderbiltSloanBurdenmansioninNewYork-nowhometotheall-girlsschoolcalledtheConventoftheSacredHeart.TheballroomandanteroomofthemansionprovideddetailsreminiscentofthehotelsuitesthatThompsonandOrenthadscoutedinRome.
