Transition Exeter

A Low Carbon City

“As individuals, communities, organisations and as a society, we will act to live in the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”.

We aim for a healthier, happier and more empowered community, whilst maintaining resilience in a changing world and minimising our negative impacts further afield.

Among the activities of Transition Exeter are:

·  Awareness raising about the issues presented by peak oil and climate change and of some of the changes in lifestyle, economy and society this will need. Transition Exeter is concerned with the problems which are already beginning to arise as the era of cheap fuel is ending; food prices will consequently rise, and food and fuel poverty will increase.

·  Energy projects: Collaboration with ECC in 2008-9, taking smart meters to schools for families to borrow and measure their energy consumption, thus reducing electricity use; home energy saving project and survey in Newtown, St Davids& Exwick and funding efficiency improvements to Exeter Community Centre through DECC’s Low Energy Assessment Fund.

·  Green Homes tour – enabling people to see energy efficiency and renewable energy installations in situ and question the owners

·  Supporting the foundation of independent social enterprises to foster a resilient economy eg. Exeter Growers, Real Food Store, Exeter Community Energy, Exeter Pound.

·  Studying and supporting debate about economic aspects of transition to a low carbon local economy, eg public discussion meetings on the Future of Exeter, city growth and housing.

·  Support organizational skills such as group facilitation, consensus building, media skills (Grassroots capacity building grant 2009-10), and offering support for individual lifestyle change.

·  Dialogue with local authorities and businesses eg about public transport. Dialogue with parliamentary candidates, hosting public meetings, hustings etc.
