  1. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2015/6

HH presented his annual report as follows;

Dear Colleagues,

In a year that has seen Brexit and Donald Trump win the US Presidency, anything I have to say may appear superfluous. However, in our own quiet way we have been moving the mountain even if some of the shovels and wheelbarrows are getting on a bit.

Anyway, enough of the metaphors, let’s take stock of what we’ve achieved together.

We’ve had some excellent speakers and visits over 2015/16. I’ll stick my neck out and say we have a knack of organising visits and speakers that are interesting, informative and entertaining. A veritable combination that we have been fortunate to enjoy on most occasions.

I wasn’t going to single-out any particular visit, they were all good, but the one that springs to mind is the P&O visit back in April when we crossed the Channel on one of their newer ferries. Meeting the Captain on docking at Calais, was an initial surprise as she was a 28 year-old woman of undoubted ability and experience.I then reminded myself that women are now flying Jumbo-Jets and are now working in areas formerly considered an all-male preserve. (I have to admit I was a little surprised, if not shocked, to see a small blond lady steering a 44 ton Scania in the days when lady truck drivers were rarer than they are now).

Well, this led me on to think about The Institute, Kent Group in particular and what we are doing to attract more women into the Group. (Did I ask the P&O ferry Captain if she was a member of the C.I.L.T. and if not, why not.) ( I honestly can’t remember now...but I should have done!) Any ideas on how we can progress with this one are very welcome and it’s an issue that will not go away...and indeed it shouldn’t.

I have some thanks to record for all those who have made Kent Group the successful Group it is. Of course, there’s always room for improvement and in a world of constant change; we have to change with it. However, on reflection, I think we can allow ourselves a modest pat on the back.

Thanks must go to Ian, our indefatigable Regional Officer, who keeps us on the straight and narrow...and does a damned sight more than his remit from Corby stipulates. Thanks, Ian for your support and timely advice...always much appreciated.

Thanks also must go to all the members of Kent Group, especially those who turn-up on a regular basis at meetings whatever the weather or time of year. You are the backbone of the Group and we all know that spineless entities don’t survive for long.

Special thanks go to the Committee; for their contribution and dedication to keeping the Group somewhere near a straight course...not always an easy task...in fact, I would say never easy task.

Inevitably, very special thanks must go to our highly valued Secretary, Chris. Brooke-Taylor, who’s organising and liaising skills are first class. An intrepid but modest fellow but worth his weight in Titanium as far as I and Kent Group are concerned. Many thanks, Chris., for all your efforts, time and energy in keeping the show on the road. It is very much appreciated...and we owe you debt of gratitude. (Perhaps sometime you can give the Group a talk on the role of the Secretary and how you keep all the balls in the air at any given time) (Only joking, Chris...well partly anyway).

To conclude, may I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year for 2017.

We go forward to an exciting time ahead...onwards and upwards...

Best wishes,

Harry.

  1. ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2017

Matthew Arnold had resigned from his roles as Vice Chairman and Treasurer but remained on the Committee

Paul Lulham was willing to take on the roles of Vice Chairman and Treasurer subject to it being possible to change the dates of monthly meetings to the first Wednesday in each month as he had an immoveable commitment on the first Thursday of each month. CMBT agreed to check with other SE CILT groups and IRTE, TWI and IMI to ensure this would not create clashes. (The change was later confirmed and implemented from September 2017).

It was also agreed that additional Committee roles of Young persons and Social Media reps should be created. PL would discuss with colleagues at DHA as he anticipated that he and Joely Hill from DHA between them could handle this

The following appointments were agreed

  • Chairman - Harry Harris
  • Vice Chairman – Paul Lulham
  • Secretary – Chris Brooke-Taylor
  • Treasurer – Paul Lulham
  • Education officer – vacant
  1. ANY OTHER BUSINESS

There were no other matters arising
