Role:Clinical Nurse Manager 2
Department:Occupational Health
Responsible to:Director of Midwifery/Nursing
Reports to:Consultant in Occupational Medicine, Assistant Director of Midwifery/Nursing with responsibility for the area and the multidisciplinary team
Liaise with: HR Department
Minimum Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- At least five years post registration nursing experience of which 2 must be in the speciality of Occupational Health
- Occupational health Qualification at third level.
- Advanced First aid course
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to undertake the functions of the role
Purpose of the Post:
The Occupational Health Nurse has a pivotal role in the co-ordination and management of health issues pertaining to the protection of staff and patients
The post holder will have accountability for;
- Health screening of potential staff
- Act as a first responder to assist staff following an occupational injury/accident or where there is an immediate danger to an individual’s health.
- Promoting good health of current employees and assist in health protection against health and safety hazards occurring in the work environment
- Ensure compliance with specific legal /Health and Safety legislation pertaining to the workplace
- The post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner, within the Occupational Health department, but reports to Consultant in Occupational Medicine
Main Responsibilities of the Post
- Pre-employment screening
- Act as a first responder to assist staff following an occupational injury.
- Reviewing and assessing management referrals, triaging of referrals
- Provision of immunization programmes
- Assessing, supporting and monitoring of staff following exposure to sharp injury
- Advice to managers on general Occupational Health related matters
- Maintenance of accurate and up to date records-Audit
Clinical Responsibilities
- In conjunction with the Consultant in Occupational Medicine; manage the day to day running of the Occupational Health Department taking cognisance of the need to facilitate current staff in all areas of the hospital and screening of potential staff
- Manage agreed vaccination programmes for new staff
- Contribute to the completion of the hospital clinical and corporate reports.
- A first aid responder and supporting staff involved in a work place accident or experiencing unexplained illness or where there is an immediate danger to an individuals health.
- Plan and co-ordinate large volume immunisations programmes for staff
- Act as an advocate for general health needs of staff by communicating, negotiating and representing these to the hospital management team.
- Act as a resource person for clinical and non-clinical staff in advice on health matters and health promotion
- To assess any employee following a body fluid exposure, undertaking a risk assessment for blood borne viruses and taking appropriate action in accordance with the national and local guidelines
- Provide appropriate advice and ongoing support to staff that sustain injuries involving human body fluids
- Identify occupational health risks for staff in the working environment and recommend remedial action ensuring a cost-effective use of resource
- Identify and communicate to all staff procedures/practices, which will ensure the implementation of Health and Safety / Occupational Health / Infection Control Policies as agreed by the hospital
- Incorporate International, National HSE ,local Policies and Guidelines for Midwives and Nurses into department practices and standards
- To undertake regular clinical audits for service area on workplace injuries and produce detailed lessons learnt action plans / feedback to the department.
- Ensure all resources are utilised cost effectively
- Participate in quality initiatives introduced by the hospital management
- Liaise with other relevant staff e.g. Infection Control Team, Microbiologist, medical teams and other appropriate specialists as required
- Undertake any other duties that may be deemed necessary by the Director Of Midwifery and Nursing.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Essential to maintain an accurate and up to date database of Occupational Health matters on all staff.
- Produce regular reports on department activity to the DOMN
- Protect the confidentiality of staff health matters, only disclosing necessary details to agreed heads of department in Human Resources or Nursing/Midwifery or their designated deputy
- Co-ordinate / be an active participant at multidisciplinary Committee meetings relating to occupational health matters within the hospital and national agencies as appropriate
- Work with Human Resources in the management of sick leave, fitness to work and safe return to work programmes
- Liaise with the Health and Safety Officer and present relevant reports on occupational injuries to the Health and Safety Committee.
- Ensure that Data Protection Regulations are adhered to
- Participate in the evaluation and selection of new equipment for the department
- Oversee the ordering of stores for the department
- Be the lead person for the HSE to contact for the Flu Vaccination service
- Liaise with outside agencies as required
Provider of Education
- Develop and presents programmes promoting employee health/wellness in the workplace
- Work cooperatively with the Health and Safety Officer to develop and manage Occupational Health maintenance programmes and to minimize risks associated with potential workplace hazards such as needle stick injuries, chemical exposure.
- Liaise with departments across the hospital for health promotion, smoking cessation increased awareness regarding workplace hygiene, and education regarding specific health topics relevant to the workplace group
- Deliver presentations / training sessions to promote health and wellbeing
Service Development
- Be aware of current developments and research within Occupational Health and to participate in educational programmes for own professional development where agreed
- Maintain Occupational records of all care provided
- Communicate with the multidisciplinary team to meet and set the key performance indicators targets for the department
- Continuously strive to improve the Occupational Health Service through evidence based practice and service improvement.
- Evaluate own personal performance based on attainment of immediate and long-term goals with the Director of Midwifery/Nursing-Participate in personal professional development process
