Take their pulse.

Take their pulse at the beginning (it may be raised as they will know they are about to do something stressful). Take their pulse again after 2 minutes and take it at the end.

When someone is stressed they might feel their heart beating more, and their heartbeat will increase.

Monitor if and when they have a drink of water.

When someone is stressed their digestive activity shuts down to conserve energy which makes their mouth dry.

Observe for shakyness.

When someone is stressed their muscles are on a ‘hair trigger’ to enable faster reactions, which causes shakyness

Monitor their breathing (check to see whether they take deep breaths, or if their breathing becomes faster.

When someone is stressed they take in more oxygen

Monitor for sweaty palms and clammy skin. Feel their palms and an area of skin before they start, during and after the activity. Observe any differences.

When someone is stressed their skin becomes clammy because blood is diverted away from it.

Monitor their reactions – just before the activity is started ask the candidate a question like “what is your middle name”. During the activity ask them another question like “what is your surname” and at the end of the activity ask them another question like “where you do you live”. Monitor how quickly the person responds and try and gauge whether there is a difference between the time they take to answer.

When someone is stressed they have faster reaction times.

Ask the candidate the following questions before and after the activity:

1)how do you feel
before)
after)

2)can you feel your heart beating?
before)
after)

Ask the person mental arithmetic sums. Start off with easy ones, and then get harder.
For 1 minute ask them sums like 2+3 or 8+6.
For the 2nd minute ask them sums like 23+6 and 44+9

For the 3rd minute ask them sums like 15+23 and 85+26

For the 4th minute ask them sums like 125+63 or 342+211

For the 5th minute ask them sums like 1225+23 and 2556+412

Make sure you say the numbers clearly, repeat them if she asks you to. If the person who has the calculator says the person has got them wrong, then repeat the whole sum again.

Use a calculator and check the sums. If the person gets it wrong say straight away and the person reading the sums will repeat it. Every time they get one wrong say straight away.
