Transition Strategy for the K-12 Basic Education Program Implementation

School Year / Events / Government / Issues or Areas for Advocacy / HEIs with High Schools
Congress / DepEd / CHED / High School / College
2011 – 2012 / Last batch of 4-year HS / Required basic legislation passed / New Basic Education Curriculum finalized / Revision of GEC led by TPGE in collaboration with TPs and Industry representatives / Government support for BEC faculty development.
Will private High Schools (PHSs) be required to offer the complete 6-year HS curriculum?
Assumption: the last two years of the 6-year HS program will either prepare students already for employment (Career Bound 5th/6th Yr.) or prepare them for further professional training in college (College-Bound 5th/6th Yr.).
Could the colleges be permitted to offer the last 2 years of HS for those intending to go on to college studies? This is particularly important if PHSs are not required to offer the complete 6-year HS program.
  • ESC concerns or possibilities (since the last 2-years of HS are basic education, hence gov’t mandate)
  • Supervision of 5th/6thYr (DepEd/TESDA or CHED?)

2012 – 2013 / First batch of 6-year HS / Revision of PSGs for different degree programs / Faculty & Staff Development and Recruitment
  • New BEC
  • Faculty for 5th& 6th year
  • Guidance Counselors etc.
Facilities development (classrooms, laboratories, library, etc.) towards SY 2017-2018 when the school will have the first batch of 5th year HS students

Faculty Development or Recruitment
Facilities development or improvement
On the assumption of reduction of units in the new GEC, make provisions for FT faculty mostly handling courses in the current GEC.

  • Lateral transfer to HS
  • Shared faculty of HS & College

2014 – 2015 / Last batch of 4-year HS graduates
2015 – 2016 / Last year of College in-take of 4-year HS graduates
2016 – 2017 / 2 SYs of practically zero first year enrollment in College / Will teachers handling the subjects in the 5th/6th Yr. be still required to be LET passers? (This will have bearing on the assignment of college GE teachers). / Implementation of 5th and 6th curriculum years of 6-Year HS program
