Week of March 9-13
Homework:
The word wall words (reading words) for this week are: again, both, gone, or, want, hard.
*Complete 4 or more word wall activities by Friday.
* Please practice them nightly. Students should be able to read them by Friday.
* Please remember to continue to review past word wall words also.
The spelling patternfor the week is listed on the colored sheet. When studying the spelling pattern with your child, please focus on the sound we are working on or the rule, rather than just memorization. Spelling test date is Friday, 3/20. Your child will be tested on some of those words as well as similar words on the spelling test day. I will send home a second copy of your child’s sort for the week to be kept at home.
***Read for at least 15 minutes and record your reading in your reading log each night!

- The students went tothe computer lab twice last week to practice XtraMath. Please try to practice your math facts a few times a week at home. Check out my website for fact practice websites, including XtraMath!
Overview of the Week:
In Language Arts, students will begin the week by listening to and discussing a passage read aloud by the teacher. Wehave a new story in our anthology this week, That Toad is Mine!. As we listen to the read aloud, read the story in our anthologies, read our “just right” books and read in our guided reading book students will work on comprehension skills with an emphasis on: problem solving. Students will identify problems and solutions in the story, and discuss how they would solve the problems. We will also explore non-fiction features in text; ie table of contents, index, glossary, headings, and begin to understand the purpose of each feature.
In Writer’s Workshop,we will continue to revise and edit our realistic fiction stories. The students will begin to write their final copy!
In Math,(due to the snow last week) we will now conclude Chapter 6: Place Value. We will review the skills and concepts taught this chapter. The students will be assessed on Chapter 6. We will begin Chapter 7- Comparing Numbers. The students will use symbols such as <,>, and = to compare numbers the students will solve problems using the strategy make a model and identify numbers that are 10 less or 10 more than a given number.
In Science,last week we learned all about balance and how to evenly distribute weight in order to balance objects. We will continue to explore motion and balance by making our own mobiles this week!
