CODEBOOK

The variables have not been defined in this data set. Thus, you will have to designate any missing values, variable labels, value labels, etc. for any variables that you utilize.

The World Handbook of Political and Social Indicators contains several data sets. The particular data set presented here is the Aggregate data set which presents political, economic, and social data and their rates of change for 155 countries. These series indicate conditions under which governments have to operate and conditions for which they may be held responsible.

The original data set contains 359 variables for 155 countries with 17 records (decks) per case (country). Thus, there a total of 2635 records. This concise version of the data set contains 20 of the most frequently used variables.

The codebook information below lists the original variable number, a hypothetical variable name, the column location on the original file (you can ignore this), a brief description, the number of decimal points (e.g., dec.=1 means that the variable format has one decimal place--if no information is provided, the data is integer value with no decimal places--the decimals should be already set in ), missing values (e.g., MV=99), and the deck and column locations on the original data set (you should ignore these--they are included only for reasons of documentation).
