DOCTORAL PROGRAMS COMMITTEE
MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 8, 2011
In attendance: Chris Hogan, Brian Pentland, David Griffith, Judy Whipple, Georgia Chao, Charlie Hadlock, Sri Talluri, Sue Haka
Meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by chair Brian Pentland.
He asked if anyone would like to take over as chair for this academic year. The committee unanimously voted Brian Pentland back as the chair for the 2011-12 academic year.
Minutes were read and approved. The minutes from each meeting will be done within 2 weeks after the meeting and posted on ANGEL for approval then will be posted on the internal web site.
David Griffith (Marketing Department) volunteered his department to nominate the student representative for the DPC committee. He later volunteered Brian Baldus a Marketing major.
GOF Allocations
Dr. Haka explained that all allocations will go to the departments this year. Last year there were funds left over, that had been kept in the dean’s office, that had to be sent back to the Graduate School.
New doctoral orientation
Charlie and Chris reported that they will be ready for the orientation on September 23. Lunch will be provided.
RCR Training
The current policy for RCR training is that students in the college of business are required to take the training we offer here. DPC feels this has advantages: (a) we use our own examples (as opposed to, say, animals, elementary school students, etc.); (b) our faculty deliver it, so students see US up there talking and they are together with other CoB students -- so it makes the whole topic more discussible and ( c) it is less time consuming than the Grad school offerings for the students. DPC is considering (but has not yet approved) the option for a student to seek approval of their program director to substitute the Grad School training (mainly as a fall-back, in case they can't attend the CoB training for some reason). They should not have to do both.
Judy Whipple suggested that this training needs to be indicated on the SARS form when the student completes the training.
RESEARCH METHOD COURSES
Dr. Wiseman had asked about these courses in the Management Department. They are still being taught. It was suggested a college list needs to be created with specific techniques taught.
DOCTORAL PROGRAM REVIEW
Dean Haka indicated that Dean Lenway would like a review done of each doctoral program. She is concerned about placement. Dean Haka had the 2007 review and asked Cindy to upload to our ANGEL site for all to review.
The dean would like a process by Spring 2012. Cindy will schedule meetings to decide on a process for the PhD program review, specifically on “how to improve placement”.
Meeting adjourned at 12:15 p.m.
