Well, this is our last eNEWS for the year 2007. We hope you have enjoyed receiving these electronic updates and that you have found some of the trainings, community events and recreational activities beneficial to your family. Our goal is to help you find new resources, information and support that will make a difference in the quality of your child’s life and family life. We truly hope our Community Connections has impacted you in a very positive way this year, and we promise to continue with more of the same in the coming year. ARE YOU NEW TO SPECIAL EDUCATION?

San Diego Unified School District Parents are invited to attend the Parent Orientation to Special Education for Parents/Caregivers of Students Recently Referred or Parents/Caregivers New to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Process. This workshop is offered by San Diego Unified School District Special Education Programs Division and the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education on Saturday, February 9th from 10:00am – 12:00noon at Ballard Center in Room B-7, located at 2375 Congress Street, San Diego 92110. This is in Old Town.

This workshop will assist parents in navigating the special education system, provide an opportunity to answer your questions and guide you through the process, give you available support systems within the district and learn about community resources. Please RSVP by calling (619) 725-7206 and state if you need an interpreter or if your child will participate in supervised child play. Smart Kids With Learning Disabilities Youth Achievement Award
Nominations for the fourth annual Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities Youth Achievement Award are due January 31, 2008. This year's $1,000.00 award recognizes the great strengths of young people with LD and/or ADHD. The award will be given to a student (high school or younger) with documented learning disabilities and/or ADHD who has demonstrated initiative, talent and determination resulting in a notable accomplishment in any field-including art, science, math athletics, or community service. The Action for Nature International Young Eco-Hero Awards recognize the individual accomplishments of young people whose personal actions significantly improve the environment. Maximum Award: $500. Eligibility: youths aged 8-16..

Student Poster Competition
The Eighth Annual Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability conference is seeking undergraduate and graduate student research; performance, writing, visual art; or applied and community service projects for a poster session and reception on Tuesday April 22, 2008. Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams Grants foster inventiveness among high school students. InvenTeams composed of high school students, teachers and mentors are asked to collaboratively identify a problem that they want to solve, research the problem and develop a prototype invention as an in-class or extracurricular project.
